One of my colleges at work has got a lightened fly wheel that he might be selling, i was wondering what would i need to do to my mini if i wanted to put it in, i mean would i have to upgrade any of my standered mini parts i.e starter motor gear box etc.

and also how much is a second hand lightened fly wheel worth roughly, its in good condition apparently.

As a price guide. I paid around £100 for a flywheel, clutch and pressure plate.

You need to check that the flywheel is the same setup as you have (either diaphragm or Verto)

you dont need to really change anything in the engine.. but if u really want a free revving engine you might to think about changing the driveshaft to carbon fibre which reduces some of the strain on the engine...

i thought fly wheels went for the 100 quid mark?

Yeah, quite a bit. They will make the engine more free-revving as it has less rotational mass to drive.

there is a good article written by Keith Calver on this subject here that is definitely worth a read

Whaaaaaaaa?

These will rotationally flex more that their metal counterparts and reduce strain on the engine.

Yes, and you will increase torque steer too. Where do these carbon fibre driveshafts come from?

HOLY COW!! CARBON DRIVESHAFTS!! they were running standard driveshafts back in the 70's with monster 1400 and 1500 a-series engines and they were coping fine, if you have a standard or lighlty modified engine they are most definately not necesary, even a 1380 is fine of std items. a lightened flywheel will increase the accelration dslightly but not massivle, it will make the engine seem to rev more freely but it wont increase the power. it all depends how much lighter than standard it is.

i dont think it would be that noticable anyway!

i know that lewmar the company that are going to be rebuilding my gearbox (changing final drives on an mr2) do all sorts including carbon fibre driveshafts...

You're going to a company that specialise in boats to get a gearbox rebuilt? :-

Not that there's anything wrong with Lewmar, I have used them myself for stuff in the past, mainly rigging & winch work though! :-

EDIT: and the carbon fibre driveshafts in that link will be for a prop too. :-
