right i need to get my subframes painted but i am being a bit fussy.

i have had some of my suspension parts powder coated, and was going to go for this on the subframes, but have been recommended not to do this as it will flake off, and water can get underneth it.

so what i would like to know is what can i use on the subframes that will be tough, but also have a neat finish AND is available in gun metal grey.

i have been experimenting with hammerite and managed to mix some black and silver to get the shade i wont, but i dont want to brush it on as it leaves brush marks (fussy i know but i want a show finish), is it posible to spray hammerite? what could i use as thinners, i tried white spirit but is seams to seperate the silver and black?

please help with any ideas
cheers
andy

But it's over priced in a spray can and you don't get much.... I'f I'd were you mate... I'd seriously consider getting some thinners and roller it on for a good smooth levelled finish..... :D

No i mean hammerite! with Hammerite thinners.... you'd have plenty in a small tin for a few good protective coats on there....

oh right i will have to have a look for that.

it will have to be sprayed i think as the roller just wont get into all the tight places.

cheers for the info

you aint used a roller before :D

If you get the spray cans... get 2-3 cans, you hardly get any in the can, it's all air, also the nozzles will clog the second you stop spraying, they're useless, and the consistancy is nothing like the brushable form... you'll need quite a few coats for it to look half way decent..

'Dogmatix' has just brushed his subframes and they look great, he mixed yellow and red hammerite and brushed it on... if you use a soft pure bristle brush you wont get hairlines when set..

that would have to be some roller to get in all the gaps, especially on the rear frame :D

yeah i got the idea of mixing the paints from dog, i manage to mix up a really nice colour as well. i might do a tester and see how it comes out with the brush. and i will get hold of some thinners and fire up the compressor as well.

do i need to use a primer with hammerite or can i just go onto the metal?

can go straihgt on mate, but if you ask me, i would'nt skimp on painting it, after all, the primer will help stop runs when you put on the hammerite, and it's effectively another layer of rust and grime protection!

I'm doing both my sub frames in black Rustolium. I'm gonna spray them using my compressor and spray gun. A bit of practice before i do the car bodywork!

I have used POR15 with a spray gun. Awesome stuff, but its more silver than gunmetal.

Hammerite can be sprayed if you use thinners. Hammerite make a special thinners but its very expensive. I just used normal cellulose thinners...

thanks for that info, i might get some more POR-15 as i know its good stuff, spray that on, then spray a top layer of hammerite to get the colour.

i think i will get the hammmerite thinners, i dont mind paying a bit extra if i know it garanteed to work!

just need to finish drilling and welding up the frames!

Yeah, i use the POR15 thinners when i spray with POR15, but i use celly thinners to clean the gun out. This is where most of the waste is... You only need about 5% thinners for POR15, but end up using half the can to clean your gun...!!
