Hello all, just thought i'd let you know how i got on at minisport on the rolling road.
Found a few problems one being the vacuum advance which was consequently removed, and the other being a small air leak on the inlet to cylinders 1+2. So this should be easily remedied with a new gasket. Other than this it ran exceptionally well, it was found to be a little lean at the bottom end so he re-profiled the needle a bit to sort that. As regards the running on this was partly down to the mixture and timing, but his main concern was the previously mentioned air leak which is reckoned to be the main cause.
Anyway after a good setup he gave it a power run. To my amazement the engine gave 78bhp at the flywheel from a standard Mg metro lump which is only rated at 72 in the sales brochure. The only non standard items are the k&n filter and the exhaust system. He said it had a very good power curve and good torque so iam pleased with that.
Anyway enough waffle here's the printout.
just got back from the rollers

That's cool for a Metro lump..... which as it happens I have just passed one off to a fellow club member who's changing from a Stage1 998...
What sort of carb, dizzy, etc are you using on the lump ?

carb, dizzy etc are all standard mg metro, only mods are the k&n and the exhaust system which consists of a sportex exhaust manifold and rc40 exhaust system. The car was running on standard 95ron unleaded. Apparently the iginition is running 16 degrees of advance at 1000rpm raising to i think 30. I've also got a 2 core rad which helps keep everything nice and cool as well as an oil cooler. The gearbox is fitted with a 3.44 diff (standard mg metro) and the wheels are 13"
I don't think i've done badly really considering most of the sepecialists who build 1293 90bhp packages very rarely get near the 90bhp mark. Put the fact that you wouldn't get much change out of a grand into account and it seams a lot of money for an extra 12hp. I think with some carb mods and a ram pipe i could hit the 80's and with some roller rockers maybe over 85?. Was also thinking of buying another mg head and having it ported.
Got the bug now, wouldn't mind a five speed box but with a baby on the way maybe it'll have to wait!

HEHE, nice 1 phil sounds like you did really well,
I bet ur over the moon with those figures.. u must have a solid block, if you going down the route for more power you will prob want to get a cam if u got roller rockers but hey spose the bug has just hit!

yeah she goes really well, it doesn't feel drastically quicker than it was but a lot smoother and torquier it'll pull in fourth from 1500revs!. On the way home i was laughing at some guy in a landrover discovery when he couldn't keep up on the motorway.

Nice one, its peace of mind to know the engine has been set up propperly too I think.
Hey, on Old Blue I had 82 bhp at the wheels from a 1275 with Kent 276 cam, mildly modified head, 1.5 roller tips, K&N, MG inlet manifold, LCB and Playmini exhaust. So it is possible with the right bits Go for it!

OK to chuck a spenner in the works. IF Minisport are any good WHY WHY WHY WHY did they carry on with the RR and re jet it when they found an air leak problem on 2 cyls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Remember that after you fix the air leak it will need re jetting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS MUST BE A PLACE TO AVOID
Siggy

the air leak was minute and was only causing problems on idle, this was part of the reason i took the car to minisport so that i could find any problems and sort them out. The power run was done mainly out of curiosity and its evident from the power figures that everything else is fine. He could of by rights charged me the £60 quid just for finding the air leak and then said i can't set it up till its fixed. But without this session i would still be in the dark. I did mention that i was thinking of a few other mods so it'll be back soon anyway. The fact also remains that the car is running a lot better now than before so thats a result and with the airleak sorted everything will be as it should.
I've never really rated minisport myself, but if i'd took it to my local one it would've cost me £85 for the same so for a change they weren't bad on price.
