i've just fitted some new windscreen corner panels onto my mini and as it sits outside and as there is bare metal exposed until it is resprayed there is a slight bit of rust formed on the bare surfaces. My question is basically, can i just clean up the metal to shiny steel again then just put some halfords rattle can grey primer on the metal to stop it rusting. Then rub it down and paint over it when the car gets resprayed? Or will all the halfords primer need removing before the respray? I just don't want to waste my money on rattle cans if it's not needed.

thanks
Andrew Cook

you can buy UPOL grey etch primer from halfords which i guess should be of better quality then the regular primer, and is compatible with paints that go on top....

Yup Upol is good i've used that. Standard stuff from Halfords is Acrylic, and i've had no probs with that either But Upol seemed to have a better finsh straight outta the can.

Yes you can prime it and then rub it back down... but i would't drive the car with bare primer patches it will just rust.

dont use primer as its hydroscopic and will absorb water, use etch primer.

in line this, is it right that you primer onto bare metal or do you treat it first or use some other product and then primer.

excuse my ignorance!!!!

You could etch prime it. :-

I think etch primer is zinc rich... so great for rust prevention on panels.

the area to be primed has to be very clean. use thinners with a clean rag to remove grease dirt etc, otherwise the primer wont stick properly :-
