are you using a primer you dont mention it

He mentions earlier in the thread that he is not using primer, just Keying the original paint in.

I have never sprayed a black gloss over a white gloss and got away with it

The original paint will cause no probs once you have correctly prepped the panel as it is a matt finish once sanded back, Don't let the above statement worry you chicky!

Everything you are doing is fine, you just need to prep properly, but you didn't know that anyway! I'm sure you'll do a great Job mate and she'll look a stunner! :-

cheers for the confidence retro, to be honest i think im going to carry on with this panel and see how it goes. At the end of the day its just a couple of spray cans and a bit of my time ill be wasting but in that time ill be gaining a lot of experience in spraying and a lot better can control, gives me a better idea of how much paint i should spray on as well.

What's this guys problem? Sorry transtrack but i have a lot more confidence with Retro who is recognised forum member for his paint and detailing then you who puts a huge spoiler on a classic car. I don't see why you keep posting pictures of your car either?

Transtrack, I'm sorry that you experience of prepping a gloss white car and spraying black over it didn't go well. All I can say is that perhaps you didn't prep it as well as you thought or maybe temerature was borderline for spraying?
If a car is flatted back correctly and thoroughly degreased, the pigment of the original will have no effect on how the new colour sits. Just because it's white wont make it unusable.

Whilst the Rattle cans aren't ideal, if properly applied and correctly finished i.e a good polish and then 2-3 good coats of wax/sealer,.. they can be very tough and hold up to the everyday abuse that cars recieve from Englands rubbish roads :D Like anything on a mini, or indeed any motorcar, maintenance is the key.

Chicky buddy. It is your car, I have given my experience of rattle can jobs and i have never had any problems in car washes or anything (frankly, anyone putting ANY car through a car wash is a fool, It's possibly the worst thing i can think to do to your cars paint apart from spilling Paint stripper on it) Transtrack has given his experiences to, and these have not been so good, and it's a shame it went wrong mate.

If it does goes tits up then something, somewhere to do with the application of the paint went wrong,

hope you are pleased retro he will make a balls of his car but with confidence

Again, all i can say is, it wont be a balls up if he does it right.

**edit** just to add to this chicky, Dimpling/blistering is caused by poor adhesion between surfaces, sometimes it's because of moisture, sometimes incorrect prep, usually both in hand :(

A spotted surface whereby you can see through to the original coats is caused by dirt getting trapped in the paint then being knocked off, also can be caused be greasy specs of dirt left behind form incorrect prep procedures.

I thought i'd add these mate so you can work out where it's going wrong if it's still not right. I'll have some pictures of some white doors i rattled canned black, they're not finished yet but i'll take some pictures of them for you :D

hi retro point taken you think a spray can does a good job. who am i to argue with someone of your experience.i have been spraying cars for to many years the only time i used a aerosol was for a push bike i wish that lad all the best with his car.the reason i posted that photo was to show the paint job wich has been standing for six months and is still spot on.if you think this is a mini with a big spoiler on fine .it took four years to completely rebuild from the floor up over four grand was spent on parts.and thousands of hours.i wont bore you with any details.but my son who is a welder by trade and my other son who works for manchester university in electronics done a complete rewire we havent just added bits on we have improved on old technology this car has side impact bars cat one alarm central locking electric windows servo brakes interior redesigned in leather its not all flash how many minis have a towing point behind the front no plate a fabricated tow bar to be honest it would take all night to say what was done to this car Ali the work was documented and photographed at every stage.over the years i wont post any photos anymore we will save them for mini mag

hi check if you think its wrong to put a huge spoiler on a classic car then mini projects must really upset you.people who keep their mini in standard condition are fine each to their own.the mini is a great car.but surely you can see that there is room for improvement on a car of that age i didnt have a problem with retro just a different opinion.the panel shop you went to give you wrong advise europaint who i use asks me to do a sample panel for him to show costomers in his shop when i buy a new metal flake i am useing, holgram was the last no, one has ever complained about a paint job i have done from jaguar to go cart its my hobby i do it for cost,to be honest i think i will go back to my other forums were i dont get hassel trying to help.good luck with your mini

Trans it sounds like a real formiddable mini you got there, I for one would love to see a project thread of it if you've got lots of photos for us that'd be great... i think it would be a great contribution to the site.

I can't quite see from the pics but the rear light clusters look interesting, they dont look std but i can't quite tell. the whole mini interests me to be honest!

i didnt have a problem with retro just a different opinion

This actually makes me happy to hear this mate because usually on forums, all to often we see that people can't accept that opinions exist :D and it turns into a slanging match, which we avoided :) yay! Agree-ing to disagree lol :o

Trans mate get a project thread up of your car or woe unto you :)

I sprayed my old Speedfight up in a long weekend (4 days) 2 years ago with Halfords Rattle cans.
The result was quite good for a first time paint.

I think the best bit of advide when spraying things Black is to make sure the Primer'd finish is perfect before going for a top coat. Black is the worst colour for showing imperfections from the under coat.

There is also nothing wrong with Spoilers on Minis. Again, Each to their own. Im not a nerdy "Oh my mini MUST be 100% origional" person. The rear "Wing" Just gave my mini a kick up the A*se into the 21st

:o Preaching 'each to their own' and 'everyone has their own tastes etc is a nice fair comment to make and totally true, and shows tolerance and understanding of other peoples likes and dislikes..... but to then say people who like original minis are nerdy kinda gets rid of the point! :D :) In any case... nice results for a first time sprayjob with cans! :)
