Hmmm, just to stir things up a bit... after I wrote my last post I looked up the definition of drifting on Wikipedia (linky), I think this opening paragraph is particularly relevant...

Drifting refers either to a driving technique, or to a sport based on the technique; this article deals primarily with the sport. When the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, and the front wheels are pointed in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right), and the driver is controlling this, the car is drifting.

read a bit found this : FWD cars do not qualify for entrance into D1GP events, nor are they eligible for Formula D events.

also the list of popular and winning cars in pro and non-pro drifting included no FWD cars... :( and really i can't emphasize enough, they (fwd cars) just slide, same with most rally cars, it's not really drifting.

True - FWD car are not permitted in most forms of drift racing .......and FWD-RWD conversions are also banned in most. Generally Drift cars have to be either Rear wheel drive or 4 wheel drive with the front drive disabled.( talking skyline here not land rovers)
I the future there is a good chance that FWD to RWD conversions will be allowed ..... but not anything based on a space frame chassis

There is a championship(time attack) that runs along side the European Drift Championship that is more like a speed event , that allows FWD cars So i remain hopeful that a mini will appear to fight it out with the japs + lotus+viper etc but so far nothing.

I have to confess that the person that writes the rules that exclude minis from drift is ...... errr ........ ME!!! sorry but as previously said , minis really cannot drift - we are talking 400 +++ bhp sideways at over 100mph

If you want to see what real drifting is about :

then half way down look for ..."Click HERE to see the Video (75mb!) " sorry could do a direct link!

yeah, fwds cannot drift. time attack is really cool, we don't have much motorsport over here. would be great to see a mini in it!
