I have some rust starting behind the rear bumper on my '68 cooper on the underside where the seams meet. Given that you can't see it because it's behind the bumper, and the car is red - can I just treat the area with my red hammerite 'direct to rust' paint or do I need to do something else?

as long as you get as much of the rust out as possible then it should last longer than being left untreated, but realy the only cure for rust is to cut it out... depening where the spots, check inside the boot aswell..

When it comes to it, Rear valances are not difficult to replace and are not that expensive either, but boot floors ion the other hand are a pain.

As an after thought, also check your closing panels on the left and right side just to make shure the're still solid.
