I have an hif44 carb it is leaking petrol from the pipe that goes to the charcoal cannister under the passenger wing. this seems to happen only when the engine is up to temp. It is a considerable amount dont know what the problem is but thought it may be something to do with the float chamber or the purge valve on the charcoal cannister any ideas?

Sounds like either a perished piece of flexible fuel line or a fault with the charcoal canister system. This should only purge when the engine is up to temperature as you have said, and it could be that the hose is past it and when it fills with fuel it leaks out. Or it could be that there is too much fuel coming into the canister in the first place for some reason, or the canister is pressurising. Check the condition of the fuel hose, and of all the vacuum hoses and parts of the system. Check that the vacuum lines are all connected up. Or is suppose it could be the float valve, but then I would expect to see fuell leaks in other places too and rich running.

Basically, check over your fuel and fuel vapour systems.

sorry to sound really strange, and sorry to hijack your thread Badoff, but what is a charcoal canister system? Is it something fitted to the later HIF44 cars?

It is a modern stoopid government thing. It traps the fuel vapour which comes off the tank and the carb float chamber, instead of these being vented directly to atmosphere as they used to be. Then when the engine is warmed up the collected fuel is purged through the engine without any proper metering and it burns off.
It is only fitted to injection cars and very very late carb models, usually those with a cat.
