The car was really ruff this morning, stuttering kinda of, jerking and it cut out when i took revs off to gear down (at a junction for example). I've adjusted the idle and it was abit better, but i think its something else. The alternator belt is tight as it should be.

I am thinking dizzy / coil? Its got a splash panel behind grill, but could damp or mositure effect it and cause these problems?

The earth strap on engine looks abit...well its seen better days, so i am thinking of replacing that too.

any ideas?

I reckon it's the damp.

Give everything electrical a good clean off, and then spray it with loads of WD40.

car is always outside these days, due to garage door breaking (and a engine sat in the middle of garage)

ok, there goes my idea of carb icing out the window - sorry matey! (my 1098 suffered from that you see). Its more likely to be electrics then really, check for condensation etc etc in this weather!

I'm gunna go get some WD40 today.

Do i just take the dizzy cap off, spray in there, the coil connections, and in ends of the HT leads?

I'll check the wiring behind the slam, as theres a earthing problem with one of my lights i think.

Don't go mental with the WD. And don't whatever you do put it inside your dizzy cap! Oil burns, dizzy caps are full of sparks, bad combination. You could blow the cap to bits and then you'll be in trouble. Make sure all the ignition parts are properly clean. It is the dirt which traps the damp and causes the problems, and the WD will eventually just hold more dirt. The plastic which the ignition parts are made from naturally repells water when it is clean. A light spray of WD will get you home if you need it, but it is an emergency thing really.

Sounds like damp is your problem though, but it might need a tune as well. If it stalls when you come off the gas something ain't right. Was the choke on at the time?

As Dan said, don't spray the inside of the cap. If there is moisture inside use a towel to remove most of it. You can then use a corner of the towel sprayed with WD to leave a thin barrier behind. by the way, try to NOT put WD on the posts or center contact inside the dizzy cap. Also, don't get it on the points. Blow or wipe points dry. A heavy mist of WD can be applied to the outside of the cap and wires. Also by the way, make sure your dizzy cap and leads are clean, not just dripping WD-40. Moist dirt makes an excellent film to help short out high-tension. Wipe it all clean. If the problem persists, start checking and replacing the components in the ignition system. For example, if you have old and cracked spark plug wires, WD is only a band-aid to get you by for a couple of days... damp will soon make them short out again.

Wont start at all now. Drove otta college, was rough still, top of street i pulled over. took a look at leads etc, n it wouldnt start. Just been brought home on a recovery truck.

So i've checked coil for spark, changed the HT leads. I aint took the dizzy cap off yet, i've got another one in garage, but then the timing will be out etc.
