I'm confused why you would bother to do this having got all the spray equipment anyway. Just primer it up normally Using whatever it is you want to... and then Spray Matt Grey Paint on over the primer.

The less paint that's on your mini, the faster it will rust,... So I would strongly recommend you primer it up AND have a colour coat.

either a hight zinc primer like the bilt hammer product i use or proper red oxide (boat building and oil rig stuff in grenral now) as the only two primers i would leave with no paint as one leaves 90% zinc on the steel, the other is non pourious. all other primers let have to be top coated

Just priming it with a zinc based primer would nto protect the car, it would rust a little slower than with primer only (about 2 weeks)
If you really want to do that sort of finish, zinc prime it, clear laquer it (or any base colour paint (non matallic, as it is cheaper) then prime over it..

I have to hang my head in shame and say, i used to have a mk3, escort, totally re-did the bodywork and primed, laquered and re-primed it..

whilst it did not rust, it stayed clean for about 2 days and the dirt and roadgrime just bedded into the primer..

So a matt or satin grey is the way to go.
