Hi all,

I will be shortly painting my bulkhead on my Mini and was wondering what the best type of paint to use? How to prep it, etc?

I have painted my bulkhead once before and it didn't work too well - the paint has since flaked off. I used high-temperature engine paint (brushed on) and I sanded it down a little before I painted it.

Should I use a de-greaser of some kind before? Is it best to sand down to bare-metal? Should I prime it, and if so, what to use? I have seen on eBay various people selling high-temperature exhaust paint in a spray-can in different colours. Would this look and work better than other paint from a tin?

Thanks in advance!!

PS: Also hoping to paint my engine too! Any different advise for that??

There is a Guide On painting your engine block etc on TMF already, use the searhc functon, it will bring up plenty of pictures and posts.

Yes you will need to degrease anything before you paint it. and a primer of somesort would be advisable. High temp paint will be fine.

Basically, rub down with 420Grit Wet and Dry used wet, then degrease, then blow a couple of layer of primer over it, rub down with something like 600Grit Wet and Dry used wet, degrease again, then shoot you high temp paint on, once one coat has gone tacky add another 3-4 light coats will equate to one good, thick, flat coat of paint.

And as for the engine block, DE-rust it using wire brushes etc, Degrease it thoroughly, block up any holes thenm brush on some Engine Enamel (available form Halfords etc etc)

Excellent guidelines. Thanks!! Just what I was after.

I'll do what you've said and post back on any tips I find as I go. Including photos, of course.

Anyone else got anything to share? :(
