Mmmmm... i think thats a question that will never be fully answered!!!

bike engines....fast, reliable (from what i can tell so far), just not much torque, not really suitable for a clubby estate full of camping gear and 4 people...

other....you mean vauxhall XE/honda vtec etc?? these must rate as one of the best in the reliability/power stakes, that the main reason why people convert...150bhp out of the box..5 gears, luverly!!

my choice.....bike engine!!

then again, maybe a vauxhall XE 16v....

or perhaps a 1380....

or a tuned 998...

oh dear i just can't decide!!!!!! :P :P

for everyday modern useage, all the traffic and then onto open roads it would have to be a modern B16a or Xe lump from either the honda or vaux, it just makes sense

Surely the best engine is the one which suites your needs, and your budget...

In my opinion, the best engine is one which starts when you turn the key, takes you from a to b, and stops when you take the key out.

And leaves you with a grin on ye face

Well, with the A/A+ series, the faster you go, the less reliable you get. A 1293 would probably be the best balance, but really, if you can afford it, get a Japanese engine in there.

i would love a civic 2.0 VTEC under the bonnet or a bike engine.

The question is really vague, "Whitch engine do you think it the fastes and most reliable" could be split up into standard engines, proformance engines, and specialist engines.

Modded engines can vary loads so speed and realiabilty will too.
