Hi,

I've just bought a '97 Cooper with a standard stereo.
The stereo was fine until it suddenly cut out whilst i was driving (display went off, music stopped).

Strange thing is, the display still lights up when you turn it on(though no figures etc are displayed), and if you stick in a tape, it'll fast forward, rewind.

The speakers don't do anything except for pops and crackles (this happens whether the stereo is on or not, bizarrely)

I'm not much of a DIYer, but wondered if anyone knew of this happening, and might it be fixable?

hmm it culdnt b the power supply because there crackling but i wuldnt think it wuld be the speekr conections becaise the dispaly is not coming on, hmm hard question that 1 is.

I don't want to rush out and get a new stereo (head unit? -you can see
i'm well up on the terminology) in case it's a problem elsewhere.

Going to die if i don't hear some music soon!

It is a bit of a stinker though.

try looking in the audio manual and entering the security code.

Unfortunately, none of the buttons work (except the ones you have to
physically press in: the tape player ones), so can't enter the code.

This sounds familiar to me, it may have happened to my car but my memory is a bit vague. I remember seeing the display lit up like this with the thing not working. I think there is an internal fuse that needs replacing, but get someone to confirm that before opening the thing up as it may just be dodgy connections. You can get these small fuses at electronics places like Maplin, do get the right one.
