well as you may know if youve read the brakes topic my dadnt couldnt stop the car at all when he lowered it onto the drive so it drove into the garden and over some bushes we then had major trouble reverseing it off.

moved the car today to find reverse is lift up as usual and goes straight in you can just about put it in first and put it into second, but not third or fourth.

when we drove the car on the drive last night before the incident 1st went straight in same with 2nd, 4th and reverse only niggle was u had to tap the lever to the right side of the box to get it in 3rd raher than being able to go traight from second to third.

grabbed hold off the selection box underneath the car belkow the gearstick and you can move it side toside is this normal? if not what could have been damaged? and is it expensive to fix?

only had the car a day and i will ad this car has got genuine 6 months mot, was taxing it for six months on staurday as its out then but at this rate im wondering if im gonna be able to drive it soon

I'm afraid i can offer you no tech advice at all (i hope you haven't excitedly
checked the thread thinking mine was a useful reply!), but want to give some sympathy, and wish you all the best in getting everything sorted :sad: .

hope i have some good luck with it soon as to put this on the road ive got to take my cinquecento off the road and i will be gutted to do that and end up with no car on the road.

if i wiggle my stick side to side inside car, the box underneath in the exhaust tunnel / gear linkage tunnel moves and hits my straight through pipe. So i guess it should move slightly, if i remember correctly.

Don't quite understand most of the problems you mention, could you tell us a bit more? The selector housing is held to the car by two rubber bushes and shouldn't move about that much. Lift the carpet and remove the two big nuts behind the selector (remove the gaitor first), this will allow the housing to drop down and you can check how healthy the bushes are. If they look ok just re attach it, if they are sheared or dry and cracking up or just worn out replace them. They are only a couple of quid each. The housing will be covered in old oil and general filth so be ready to get oily.
The gearstick doesn't have a centering spring so you will alway have to move it to whichever gear you want all by yourself. Sorry if that seems like a lot of hard work :wink: . You can buy an aftermarket centering spring if you want which works surprisingly well and does speed up the shift from second into third.

As above, plus you do seem to be having a few problems with this motor..

Also check that the upper rod of the rod change mechanisim is actually connected to the back of the gear box. If the distance from the box to change has shortened it will make it almost impossible to get into 1st and 3rd, and vice-versa 2nd & 4th if it has lengthend....

Unless you are planning to take the vehicle of the road, my advice is, get it down an MOT station, pay the 30 quid or so, and listen to what the tester has to say...

Should move a bit , the rod can get bent especially if you've driven over a rockery or something. Take the previous advice get it retested before you use it. And remember everything can be fixed don't give up.

not giving up yet and did more work on my clubman before i give up on that so it would be unfair to give up on this now.

checked the rods neither are bent or dented etc and dont move forward or backwards.

top moves side to side loads but looks like its ment to and bottom moves side to side and the joint where the rod goes into the back of the gearbox is leaking with oil so will fix that soon but after explaining to the mechanic at mini mine he saids it doesent sound like the rods and the leak could cause that problem he saids its in the selector box that im gonna check tommorow.

clutchwise are you verto or none verto. one needs adjusting when the clutch wears down the other doesn't...........can anyone expand on this? could it be something as simple as the clutch needing adjusting???? the rod change gear selector is mounted on rubber "cotton reel" bushes, so you should have some play there! good luck!!!!!

ill need luck with this car by the looks of it but i dont know which type of clutch my mini has but surely if it was okish when it came on the drive then it wouldnt of changed within a few hours.

going to check inside the selector box tomorrow after ive done the brakes only problem is im going college in the day till about half three and then going work at half five, but ill see what i can get done
