when putting 10 inch wheels on 8.4 inch brakes using the 'special mod', does anyone know if there is a wheel you can use that you dont have to trim so much off the caliper?
also what width spacer is normally used?
brake mods and wheels?

Never modify a caliper. By grinding them, you will have the have them tested, the normal way to test them is to keep building up the pressure in the system untill they fail.
To then fit the 10 inch wheel you need to use large spacers which increase the track so much that you can see the disc and caliper from the from of the car with the wheel still on.
The spacers change the castor angle so much that the bump steer created is dangerous.
Also in wet weather you are likey to lose the brakes due to all the water on the pads and calipers.
If you want 10's the only safe way is S discs and calipers or alloy 4 pots and 7.9 discs
Siggy
