need some help! bought a new (old) mini 1980 i think :grin: automatic for about £275 with 10 months MOT and 6 months tax but drove it home and within about 10mins from mine something went on it :sad: , i am not used to autos so thought maybe it was me, so let my friend have a go but no it wouldn't move, it fires up but when you put it into gear it don't go nowhere except reverse it works in reverse don't know why! i do have another engine and box to go in but would still like to know why it won't work, any ideas?

Aint a clue about the auto.
But if ur dropping a manuel engine n box in, u'll need a different subframe, just incase u over looked that.

Hmmn, auto boxes. Personally I would suggest you buy a copy of the genuine Rover workshop manual. All the test procedures for the autobox are in there as well as complete repair instructions (in case you feel like tackling it yourself which I wouldn't advise, but if it really is dead you can't make it any worse!). The information on the autobox takes up most of the book, so I can't really go into too much detail here. I'll just say that there are things that you can adjust yourself, and the box is designed to protect itself in some ways so it shouldn't be completely broken. Some of the tests need special tools to be able to do properly but you can get much useful information on the health of the box without these. The book is about twenty quid from Rover dealers or Mini specialists.

As Dan says and most Mini Auto gearbox's fail due to lack of oil changes.
