ok we are having a bit of a problem with my freinds car, he has a 1275metro engine fitted and it is smoking like a chimney.
we have done the valves clearances
checked the timing this was at 4deg btdc, but is now at 11deg btdc @ 1500 with the vacuam advance off.
we have just found the mixture screw to see if this will help.
a compression test was 14bar at all cylinders, only a dry test was carried out. the spark plugs where all dry but with sooty deposits, which would indicate rich running, does anyone else have any other reason why this would be happening that i might of forgotten.
cheers you lot

it could be valve stem oil seals, or alternatively check to see if you have a breather pipe connected to the carb, coming from the engine. i've had 2 engines become very smokey, one of them a brand new MED engine, and it was just oil getting sucked up the breather pipe!.....if you find it is this pipe, just pull it off and let it breathe to atmosphere, and just plug the pipe on the carb with a 1/4" bolt, stuck in with a little mastic.

worn valve stem seals would be the main major one
where the valves go up and down in the head, they are sealed off so that the oil from the rocker gear doesnt reach the combustion chamber, when these seals get worn, small deposits of oil enters the chamber and gets combusted...
hey presto, smoke.

If its running too rich (black smoke + sooty deposits on plugs), it could be that your float chamber is overflowing. I had this problem and you get plumes of black smoke out the back since the float doesn't close the valve, putting too much fuel into the carb.

ok to update the post daz and myself are going with the majority here and with what we were both thinking and that is the valve stem oil seals, we will be getting a head gasket set and doing the seals grinding in the valves and changing the head gasket.
a topic will be posted in FAQ as we will be tacking pictures as we do it for other members to use when they do there's.
as for teh carb katie its a hif44 but haven't checked which needle is in it. though i will let you know when it is all done

ok we have an update on the chimney as we are calling this car for now.
thinking along the lines of vlve stem oil seals, the head was removed, and all the old gaskets cleaned off, the head was stripped down and the valves reground in, the valves expecially the exhaust were pitted, it was then all put back together.
now when you start the car there is no smoke, it has new plugs, which now need another good clean, what we have found out today is 1 of the plugs is faulty, but she is still smoking like a chimney.
my thoughts on this are now going to the crankcase breather, and the possability of the oil being drawn through this into the carb, we are going to remove and clean the carb, will this help. the photo helps to identify what i think the problem is but i am not even 80% sure so would like another opinion
:wales: cheers all
this is not the engine we are having trouble with what i would like to know is is that the crankcase breather arrowed, and does the 1 fitted where the other box is do the same job and can they be tested
cheers again
