Hi
I'm looking at a 1991 carb fed Cooper and I'm not 100% sure that it's got the right engine in it. Does anyone know how to tell from the engine code if it is a real Cooper engine?
Cheers
Alan

Not sure if there was anything special about the late model coopers, as opposed to the early ( MK1/2/3 )...
Thought they just had a 12H engine rhumoured to develop about 80hp ?

They've got 61bhp according to Autodata. Unfortuantely I don't know what the codes are to find out if it is genuine or not.

I've got a 1991 Cooper which is a single 1 3/4 SU so sound like that same engine as the factory one. Single point injection didn't start til the early J plates if i'm not wrong.
I'll get the engine number if you want but dunno if this will help ya if they are not unique in anyway.

All 1275 engines fitted 1990 on with carbs were numbered 12A/2A without a cat or 12A/2B if they had the cat ftted. There are various suffix groups, but none of them identify the Cooper specifically. G01 and F53 identify a compression ratio of 10:1 which I think was unique to Coopers (F53 being with an oil cooler and G01 without), but both of these are also listed as having a cat fitted.
