well it is.. but you'll probably end up with a "Q" plate, the other option is to buy a brand spanking new shell from heritage..

It's a realy dodgy area, when rebuilding vehicles.. Not that I do it very often, but I work on the principle, that the VIN & Reg stay with the shell, If the shell goes, then the VIN & Reg go with it...

guess as i want the classic reg i will have to shell for the repairs hehehe
it is annoying because an sva tester told me that as long as i genuinly swapped all the parts onto a new shell then it could maintain its reg maybe he ment a new shell not a preregistered one

gonna cheat and hope my local constabulary isn't looking to closely
no i ma not going to do anything illegal apart from displaying a black and silver plate on a 1991 car i am going to transfer the reg and put up with the tax
i know it seems odd but i am going for a classic look and the black and silver is v important to that also far less cahnce of gettiong pulled with a reg that at least looks right

Is 1970 mk2 or 3?i cant remember. Anyway if its a 3 i would just swap the vins over as its almost impossiable to tell a mk3/5 appart. the main differences are rubber mounted subframes and 12" wheels, so i suppose it would just look modded! illegal though but if both the cars are yours i dont see the harm.
On the other hand if its a mk2 restore it they are rare+i doubt you would get away with a vin swap they are very different shells.

MK 1.2.3 all have a double bolt on the front Subframe, Mk4's on have the single turret bolt...

Also remeber that the VIN number is etched into the channel in the scuttle...

Mind you, all being said, I have a MK3 which has been reshelled, but the shell was bought BN from BMC in the late 70's after the car was accident damaged... That is why I didn't restore it to concourse, but instead as a mini which can cope with modern day traffic...

And as pickup76 says, If your not trying to pass it off as something it isnt.. then who's it gonna hurt, Does the V5 currently describe the vehicle as an Historic Vehicle or PLG, if so when you request the change, the DVLA are entitled to inspect the vehicle.

when i bought my current mini jem the log book said plg even though it a 1971 plate, i phoned up the dvla and they said all i had to do was take my paperwork (insurance, mot tax disc and log book) up to my local dvla office and they'd sort it out.
off i went up to norwich, showed the chap all my stuff and explained that i wanted the car as historic one. 10 minutes later i'm walking out with a 12 month free tax disc, he sorted out my logbook, and took my old tax disc.
a couple of weeks later i get my new log book through with the car now historic, a couple more weeks and i get the refund for the remainder of the tax i'd already paid for.
at no time during this was it ever mentioned that they might want to inspect the car even though it had been off the road for about 25 years prior to me buying it.
