Engine cuts out at low revs, and swiftune suggested that the dash pot was sticking and was something that they picked up whilst running my new engine in.

I removed it yesterday to give it a good clean through with new oil, and loads of bits of plastic came out. It's where the plastic cap is treaded and some bits had grated off it. Put it back on but was still cutting out.

reomoved it today and found a big chunk missing from end of the recessed guide. you can just about make it out in this pic.

Where can I get a new dash pot from for reasonable money?
...and should there be a gasket in between the dash pot and the carb?

hi al

what type of carb have you got fitted HS4 OR HIFF44, though i do believe that the pot sizes are all the same, so it will be a 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 carb, i have a couple of good dashpots from a 1 1/2 HS4 plus a 2nd hand HIF44 sitting in the shed.

there is no gasket between the carb and pot.

also what condition is the pipe from the breather to the carb?

Are you replacing the Pot ( suction chamber ) or the piston, eitherway, you'll need to perform what is called the drop test when you bring the two together. This makes sure that the fit is not too loose or tight...

Taken from SU maintenance manual....

To check the piston on standard suction chambers, lightly oil the piston rod, assemble the piston to the suction chamber, and fit a large washer to one of the lugs. Do not fit the spring. Dip the damper in oil, then tighten in the suction chamber. Temporarily plug the two transfer holes in the piston. With the suction chamber inverted, check the time take for the suction chamber to fall the extent of it's travel. If the time taken is not 5 to 7 seconds check the components for wear, misalignment and cleanliness

Thats a piston you need not a dash pot.

Unless the carb has had time spent reworking it get a complete carb. Fitting a piston from another carb can cause the piston to stick.

Sorry, school boy error!
It's an 1 3/4 HIF44.
How much do you want for the 2nd hand HIF44?

Breather pipe looks ok

yeah it is the piston in the pot, not the actual pot.

But may be sorted if me and cowboy strike a deal.
