some of you might remember me reporting a starting problem with my 96' cooper a few weeks ago when it conked out on me.

Well after a month, a new ECU, fuel filter, cleaned injectors, EVERYTHING checked by a mechanic, and auto electrician it still won't run!

It is still at rover right now, i have given them permission to work on it for 2 hours but no more, at £48 an hour + vat.. ROBBING B*****ds

If they don't sort it, then what next?? strip it for parts??

Well, if they don't fix the problem, then they can't charge you for it. Worth remembering that.

They can, he said that he can't afford to be paying for one of his men to be working on it for free..

This is very strange, have you tried more than one Rover dealer or just the same one? What exactly is wrong with it, I seem to have forgotten!

hi all..

i was heading home the other night, when i pulled away from a set of traffic lights, i lost all power, and had to pull over to the side of the road, when it conked out.

It wouldn't start up again, only when i 'pulsed' the throttle, by pressing it loads of times, then i could just about make it tick over.

Towed it home, and checked all the wiring to all the sensors.

I have put it down to fueling, as there is definately a spark, and the throtle body is clean. so changed the fuel filter, cleaned the rail/injectors out. still nothing.

Took it to a mates garage where he looked over it himself for a few hours, then he called out a electrical mechanic whom put it down to 'faulty ecu'

Bought a new ECU off a 98' mini from the breakers, and i was told that i would need to get it 'coded' to the car, and only Rover could do it. So towed it to Rover yesterday and they did the ECU, they said it went fine. But they couldn't get it to start still.

Now i rekon, after hours of searching on the ineternet that it is something to do with The 'cam' sensor. If you have a look through this website it does a trouble shooting, i would do it, but it is at rover at the mo, and i need a circuit tester.

Basically the engine will start for a few seconds, then cut out. that is the symptons, you can hear the fuel pump, the injectors operating, etc etc etc/

Have you checked the fuel pump? Could be failing. Also if your fuel pipe is damaged you may have a leak or you may not be getting enough fuel to the engine to keep it running

If you can still hear the pump running and the injectors firing and there are sparks then it seems the new ECU is working. Is the correct fuel pressure being maintained in the fuel rail, as this is very important for the injection system to work. Is the charcoal canister system working ok? As Pavel suggested it sounds like a problem with fuel getting from the tank to the rail, or staying in the rail once it gets there. It could be (this is a bit of a long shot) that a faulty coolant sensor is making the engine think it has warmed up faster than it has, so it shuts off the cold start and opens the canister purge valve too early which would lean it right out. This would show up as the coolant gauge reading normal very soon after starting. Coolant sensors are very well known for messing up the injected Minis.
Can you tell us anything else?

I was going to look into the charcoal canistor, but i wasn't sure how it worked or what it did, so i didn't touch it.

Got bad news from rover today, they couldn't figure out any problems with it!

Do you think it might be worth while getting a voltometre and testing all of the sensors manually?

Can't really tell you anything else, only something small that may be messing something up.

When i fitted the new fuel filter, i split one of the pipes, but i nipped down to a mates garage who made me one, but the pipe diametre was narrower then the previous one this is only a short section of pipe, about 1Ft long, going from the fuel tank, down into the fuel filter on the rear subframe, would that be starving it of fuel. i did do this after it had broken down.

Fuel is definatly 100% coming through the pipes under the car, as i took it off at the fuel rail side, and turned the ignition on, which made the fuel spurt out of the pipe.

The electrical bloke said that fuel is going into the bores when you click the ignition on, but there is something telling it to shut off as soon as it fires.

now from what Dan and that website has said it could be a number of things:

Fuel inertia switch - could try bypassing it temporarily

Coolant sensor - Could test, or get hold of another one

Cam phase Sensor- could test, or get hold of another one. but i am not sure where it is located on the engine!

I doubt it's the inertia switch. It's just a switch, it's either on or off. If it pumps fuel the switch is on.

ok, well that leads it down to water sensor, and cam phase sensor..

Mite nip into the scrappy tomorrow, see if i can get hold of a phase sensor from an 214 rover.

Went back down to rover today, and still no luck..

one of the blokes wanted me to tow it back home

Spoken to the mechanic who worked on it (yes, they actually let me into the workshop) And he has discounted the crank sensor, lack of fuel, and some other things. Tomorrow he is going to look into alarm unit, and water temp sensor, as he understood where i was coming from when i mentioned Dans theory.

convert to carb if its right year, alot less problems and cheaper to fix.

Ok, just a quick update on progress, the rung me up today, and said that they THINK it is the fuel pump not pumping up to 3 bar pressure. now they want me to fork out £180+VAT for a new pump, BUT if it doesn't work, they won't give me my money back, now who the hell are these people??
My dad is going to be having words tomorrow :angry:

I cannot get hold of a second hand pump anywhere, minispares said to fit a Facet inline pump for £45 which is an idea.
