Ive driven my Cooper SPi for a few months now completely hassle free (hmmm) but i was driving the other day and as i put the car in to 3rd gear the engine started dying and then bouncing back in to life violently. it felt as if the car really didn't want to be in that gear (but worse) so i went back to 2nd and it did the same thing again.

the engine idled nicely but as soon as you so much as touch the accelerator it does it again - dies and almost bump starts again. what is the problem lightly to be? it feels like ignition but it could be fuel (fuels normally more spluttery then this). also, if the clutch is in or the car is in neutral you can rev nicely through the entire power band with no problems. the problem is only present when there is strain on the engine.

one more thing. when i eventually got the car home (6 miles in 1st gear idling) and went to have a butchers under the bonnet i noticed all the spot welds around the front corner under the offside headlight had broken and the hole wing was hanging down held on by the other side. is this related? or has it just been caused by the violence of the earlier occurances?

any thanks is greatly appreciated :D

Can you rock the engine using both hands on the rocker cover....

If so it's your engine mounts/tie bars or possibly even subframe mounts...

if none of the above and only happens when the engine is under load, it MAY be the double roller bearing in the gearbox collapsing, I've had this happen a loooooong time ago in one of mine, and what it would do is suddenly lockup, more so at very low speeds in 1st gear, so is testable in a safe environment.

Hey i had what sounds like a similar problem the other ay with my mini and it was after i changed all the electrics! i found out it was a faulty condenser that i had put in but mine did do that when there was no strain on the engine! although i dunno much bout a cooper! jst thought it might help you!

There are a couple of things that can cause this and most revolve around the MAP sensor in the ECU.

You need to make sure that the small black, red and yellow capilary lines are all in good condition and connecter to their respective pints on the engine and ECU.

Check that there is no fuel in the in the line that connects to the ecu, take it off and blow through it.

Let me know how you get on
