ok for my mot need a few thins doing.......
1) balljoint
2) a cv rubber things behind the hub has burst
and...............my tracking
ok i set it, go for a drive, come back take the wheel off do come stuff with the suspension and its miles out!!
any ideas why??
sterring rack? or cud it be that the hub is not connected to the drive shaft correctly?? because thats were the burst rubber housing is!!

Not to sure about this area really, well i dont know a thing. However when you put the new things on it could need ajusting again so i would (this is me dont follow my advice just saying what i would do really) get the things that need replacing done and then try the tracking again. It could solve the problem :saywhat:

When you say "do stuff with the Suspension" are we talking about adjustables ???
are you altering tie rod lengths / camber / ride height.. etc.. as all of these will affect the track.
With the rack is there any noticable 'slop' in the steering, ie get the wheels off the ground and at a 3 and 9 oclock position, wobble the wheel, if you feel any movement then your trackrod ends are possibly gone ( an MOT will pick this up - and fail the car ) if they are stable and you still feel slop then it is possible that the ball and socket joint in the rack has given up, or the rack is worn, and I believe that's cause for a new rack..

Im having exactly this problem, whenever i set the tracking it just went off again and it was scrubbing tire. I went to deans minis and they said balljoints, I THINK NOT! my balljoints are perfect but after lots more investigation ive disgnosed track rod ends, but it still did it. So finally i recon its a nakered steering rack :sad: Play but, its stiff play as its been really greased up by the previous owner so its hard to spot.
Should be changing the rack this week end, looking forward to it :wink:

(just wondering if the steering arms on the hub could be bent, or possible elongation of the holes in the arms where the trackrod ends go through? Is that at all possible?)

Bent steering arms wouldn't cause the tracking to keep changing time and again, but worn tapers could well do as you suggest Minis84.
They would need to be very worn though, as this taper can take up quite a lot of wear. Or the arms could be loose if the dowels are worn in the hub uprights.

When setting your tracking, you are driving in with steering wheel dead straight and stopping using the handbrake arent you?

You can do it sitting on the drive if you want...
I posted it somewhere when I was lookin to sort the rear tracking...
First of all...
Set your car on level ground, handbrake on.. lift the carpets ( if you have any ) in the front to access the gromet on the passenger side, beneath which is an plastic screw on the steering rack. Undo this and insert a suitably sized rod ( I think 1/4 diameter is about right, I use the end of a drill bit ) you may have to turn the steering left and right to locate.... This procedure centralises the rack...
Next get a long bit of string and wrap it round the front and back wheels...
Then look for the gaps between the string and the wheels... to get things approximately right the string should be straight front to back with no gaps..
