Ouch !

but saying that, depends where they came from, and who fitted them ! nothing more constuctive could be added to the thread.

Hope he can get compensation but it sounds a bit tricky.

wow thats horrific! So that was caused by defective rather than worn ball joints right? I had to re shim mine recently to reduce the play to correct levels, is that dangerous?

thats the idea of the shims, so you can take up the wear. but , obviously, if the pin or the inside of the big nut is very worn, then change them, as they are very cheap.

Never had one fail on a mini (except at MOT time  ) but did have one pull out on my Rover 800 - pretty scary experience but fortunately I was only going slowly at the time.

never had a ball joint go.... but ive had the bolt that holds the bottom arm in place snap before, letting the bottom arm go completely, which id imagine is similar
it happened to me going round a roundabout, on the outside wheel, and it was scary as f**k, just had no control, no drive, nothing.
not the kinda thing you should look forward to....

I was put off fitting some of the cheaper ones, (£7.50 ish) to TC's and Jem's cars by someone who knows about these things and just had them reshimmed by a reputable garage (JONSPEED in Nuneaton). The better quality ones are twice the price but..... It was also suggested to me to use carburundum paste on the ball and socket to smooth out any rough spots, then clean out and grease before fitting.
