You don't have to, they didn't as standard but then they only tended to fit coolers to cars which really needed them and even then they used fairly small oil radiators. If you don't fit one the oil will run really cold a lot of the time and will take longer to warm up. They fit in the cooler feed line from the engine, unless you have the twin point block in which case you can buy an oil cooler sandwich plate with the stat already fitted to it.

You MUST fit a stat as the oil will never reach working temp, during normal running and even hard driving.

thats what iv heard before, though i cant see how it would work at it cant cut the oil off from the rest of the engine, all i can think of is if the themostat makes it bypass the cooler

Yes that's it. You run both the feed and return from the engine to the stat and then two more hoses from the stat to the cooler. Then when the oil is cold it flows through the stat and directly back into the engine, as it heats up the flow is diverted into the oil rad, and then it comes back from the rad through the stat body again and into the engine.

But they also sell a "sandwich plate" version like this:

What temperature do they need to kick in at? 75 degrees?

Sandwich plates are what you need to attach a cooler to a twin point block, and the one with the built in stat is ideal. They tend to make the filter hang too low on the earlier engines so that it can interfere with the subframe front member. Depends on how thick the plate is but you've no more than an inch clearance really if you want to keep it easy to change the filter.

I'm gonna fit an inline thermostat too. Anyone got any pics for inspiration where to mount it.
I was just gonna plumb it in, but hadn't considered the fact that it would flap about.

Oil is fine to 110-120 degrees C.

If yours doesnt get that hot dont worry

If it doesn't get to 70 then you are getting no benifit from the aditives in the oil that REALLY help your engine out.

Cold is MUCH worse than hot.
