whenever i pull out the choke (to the usual position) the car seems to run too rich and it coughs and splutters. so i have to start the car using the accelerator pedal, which can take a while to get used to

if i adjust the mixture screw (to lean it off) on the back left of the carb would it make much difference

by the way i swapped the engine over about a month ago, and its done it ever since

if its running too rich, turn the screw to lean it off abit. Remember how many flats (flat part on the bolt) or turns u do, then u can always put it back if it gets worse.

Hope u get it sorted, amount of carbs i've had lately.....bloody car.

Madmax, basically you need a quick tune, as jordie says ( if it's an HS carb ) you'll have to turn the mixture nut ( underneath the carb ) a couple or so turns to lean it off, if it's an HIF then there's a a screw on the LHS of the towards the back, this you turn anti clockwise to lean off, and clockwise to richen...

In bothcases, a good starting point is... get the car warm, and idling about 1200, use the idle screw to achieve this... and remove the vacuum pipe from the dizzy.

Now weaken the mixture until the engine starts to hunt, ( drops revs etc... ), richen it slowly unit steady idle is just achieved...

If you have a strobe, check the timing, and refer to manual for the correct advance, but I find 12 BTDC is pretty ok to get an engine going.

Put the vac pipe back on and back the idle down to an acceptable level...

This should have set the car in-tune ( or close to ) while idling....

The continuing issue is that it may be out of tune when travelling along... but I'm quite sure there's books which have been written about that !! :cheese:

hey thanks jordie & guessworks

yeh i was pretty sure it would be mixture, its a HIF and i pretty much know my way around em

unfortunatly dont have a timing light, do you think it would be worth getting a garage to have a check with a light?

or shall i just get it to what i thinks right and tinker

i know running too lean or rich can cause serious problems

Some Tool Hire shops have timing lights, take a look, u may be able to borrow one for afew hours for next to nothing.

Another thing you might want to check is if you pull out your choke a lot, do the revs rise? If they DON'T, then you want to screw in the little bolt on the choke arm that presses against the throttle cam, opening the butterfly a bit. If it doesn't do that, then on full choke your carb will get too much fuel.

Note that the screw shouldn't touch the throttle cam when no choke is applied. There should be a 2ish mm clearance I think with no choke, but do not quote me on that number!!!

when the choke is pulled out slowly to about 1-2cm extension, the revs slightly rise

after this mark, the engine splutters and stalls, even with application of accelerator, im pretty sure its getting too much fuel in the first place, without the choke

its becoming a a**se in the mornings to start, it sometimes takes 30-40seconds of the starter motor turning it over to even get it to splutter

im going to check the ignition timing, mixture and idle on tuesday, i shall re-do the whole lot
