anything registered before the 1st of jan 73 is allowed black plates so only tax exempt cars would be allowed them

the law is very tight on the making of numberplates, personalised or replacements

if you are trying to make a car look either newer or older, the police will have an input

Its illegal to buy a new plate for a vehicle manufactured after 1st January 1973 that does not meet the new spacing and font sizes because of the new suffixes and to stop people with personalised numberplates altering the spacing to make the plate look like something else.
For example, this was on a Honda Civic that ran round near me:

It should of been - C1 VIC
But it actually read - C1VIC

You can still buy altered plates as "show" plates.
Also my mate Matt had a K reg Rover 216 Coupe, and it had black/silver plates and they looked amazing, but for being caught with them on, he got a £250 fine.
Save the black plates until you get to France, then look amazing!

I've been pulled over for having B&W plates, and took great joy in explaining to the spotty youth ( oops Nice Mr Policeman ) that he should read the read the regulations himself...

Oh the joys of having a Historic Vehicle !

And yes the point about the Black peeling on the Ali plates is right, I keep having to bend my front one back into shape...

Ur bound to get pulled having them on a rover K reg.....a car such as the mini tho, could pass for a classic even if tis a 2000 reg car, plain fact its less noticeable. or say it came that way when u bought it....
