I have a 52 plate Clio that always indicates right except when indicating left. You can hear the click of it self cancelling but still it indicates right. I have replaced the stalk with one off a scrapper and still it indicates right. Checked the bulbs etc but still having no joy. Any ideas?

Anyone else had this problem and has anyone actually solved it themselves. Been quoted £300 to fix it by a Renault dealer >_< so I would quite like to try anything before resulting to that!

Cheers

I'm having indicator problems with my Mini, but Christ on a bike £300.00 is just taking the proverbial.

I'd say it's probably a relay fault, but check the fuses too.

Well ok, since it'll save you some money to spend, much more wisely, on your Mini >_<

First off, don't go to a main dealer unless you need the browny points for your service history.

You could start with the switch off the column and see if you can make it cancel by hand - not clear if your saying you can never turn the indicators off.

If it's electrical then the there must be a short somewhere. Hazard switch could be to blame.

If you have a wiring diagram trace the indicators back from the bulbs to look for likely culprits.

Doesn't have parking lights does it?

Haha. Cheers gents

The problem is it always indicates right. The stalk cancels and the car still indicates right. Hazards work (although not swapped out the switch yet) and it only doesn't indicate right when the stalk is switched to indicate left. I have swapped out the origonal stalk and it still happens. I have not started the car without the stalk attached which I shall try tomorrow.

I traced alll the wires and tested it all and sadly everthing appears sound. All the auxillaries attach to a loom which has a box of tricks in it half way down. I think this is called a UCH (Unite Centrale Habiticle) and it controls everything including the immobiliser. If thats the problem it has to go to Renault to be replaced and reprogrammed. Yup, thats right, replaced. It can only be programmed once and the part costs a fair bit!

Renault quoted £300, the local garage quoted £350 and all they will do is drive it to Renault for me!

So 4 cars in my fleet, the one I don't own is the only one street legal. I hate my hobby sometimes. . . >_<

Modern cars with multiplex electronics and body computers are a nightmare to sort out when things like this happen. Try finding out which pins do what in the hazard switch, removing it and jumping it all through to get the indicators working without the switch being there. Don't connect up any more terminals from the switch than you have to, you should be able to get it working on two. If the problem is still there it does sound like a body ECU problem.

And with the body computer you can only go to renault, they created it themselves (I worked on the diesel engine management ECU), as only they have the equipment to fit a new one. (Coded to the car etc)

I had a 52 plate clio in for the same problem about 6 months ago. I could have saved you buying a stalk.
Basically its a £261 flasher unit from Renault. I bought one then fitted it and the indicators worked fine. One slight problem tho
it would not start and the central locking stopped working. It had to be coded to the vehicle another £46 at Renault.

All the relays for the car are sub miniature's soldered to one main circuit board, hence the cost of the board.
I did mean to keep the old one and investigate to see if I could repair it. I think the contacts weld together on one relay.

Not many diagnostic machines will talk to Renaults so it usually means a trip to Renault themselves.
You could buy the unit from Renault fit it yourself (just behind the glove box) and have them recode it, might save a little on labour. Having said that you would have to do it in their car park as it will not start any more.

After been landed with a quote to repair a "most likely cause" I didn't think spending £10 on a second hand stalk, a possible cause, was that bad really. It might of saved me 290 beer tokens.

It looks like it will visit the Renault garage then. It had a fault before that needed to be read on the diagnostic machine, the damn car just wouldn't lock its doors. On the way to the appointment it cleared itself and the fault disappeared. Hopefully this time will just be a repeat of last!

So what/who should I be cursing? Modern cars, Renaults or just blame it all on the French? :shifty:

Its just French electrics you should be cursing.

Another pass time of mine is repairing Renaults with prematurely snapped timing belts.
