The engine in my cooper was replaced in apprx '91 with a recon unit. However, I have no idea how old it is or what car it came out of - is there any way to identify this?

And as a side question, what is the best/easiest way to drain cooling system? My rad doesn't seem to have a drain tap/plug on the front underside, and the engine drain plug on the back of the block is rather difficult to get at with a socket/spanner.

I undid the bottom hose on radiator....when car was parked near a grate.

you will need the engine number to identify it and the date may or may not be possible depends on engine no. really

When you say '91, what sort of cooper is yours ? and as Jordie says, depends on the engine number, which one hopes is still on the engine...

failing that take some photies front back and top and we may be able to get close by the characteristics of the block.

yeah try get some photos up it'll be easier for the rest to see what kind of engine you'll have

As has been said, give us the engine number and someone will track it down for you.

Cooper is a 1968 MkII - engine is much more recent than that - I only know it to be a 1275cc unit. Will post a pic later

Also - where exactly would I find the engine number?

You was robbed mate, as your cooper engine was probably worth 4 times the engine you have in it now, unless that turns out to be a cooper too...

engine number should be where indicated, if not present then the engine will probably have been modified, either re-bore or skimmed.
