How old and what is my engine?

And as a side question, what is the best/easiest way to drain cooling system? My rad doesn't seem to have a drain tap/plug on the front underside, and the engine drain plug on the back of the block is rather difficult to get at with a socket/spanner.

you will need the engine number to identify it and the date may or may not be possible depends on engine no. really

failing that take some photies front back and top and we may be able to get close by the characteristics of the block.

Cooper is a 1968 MkII - engine is much more recent than that - I only know it to be a 1275cc unit. Will post a pic laterWhen you say '91, what sort of cooper is yours ? and as Jordie says, depends on the engine number, which one hopes is still on the engine...
failing that take some photies front back and top and we may be able to get close by the characteristics of the block.
Also - where exactly would I find the engine number?
many thanks for the help

engine number should be where indicated, if not present then the engine will probably have been modified, either re-bore or skimmed.
