sounds like the speedo cable could well have come off the speedo housing at the speedo end, then slipped back on again. Check that the connection from the cable to the speedo gauge is secure behind the dash.

sounds like loose speedo cable, stick your hand down the back of the right side of the engine (when its not hot of course) and you should be able to feel for the speedo drive connection, undo it and check the square/tapered end to look for damage, do the same with the bit connecting to the speedo binnacle. be sure when its put back on that it goes on square, as twice mine shredded the thread on the drive, and i had to replace it.
mine used to do the same, replaced the cable for about 7 quid and its worked fine ever since.

Hi, i am the lad from work mark was talking about. Thanx for the replies, will have a proper look tomorow. The speedo seems to work for about 5 miles then starts rattling from the bulkhead area and packs up. Does sound like cable fault as has been said. Thanx, marc

Yup definitely the cable then (at the speedo end if the noise is comin from the bulkhead). When worn/dry it will also usually squeak every so often!
New cable is about 5-6 quid, but replacing it can be a VERY fiddly job at the gearbox end if you don't know where it is and have big forearms
Thought of going to Centre-Speedo setup? I think clubmans with centre speedo's look ultimate (since they never actually came with that setup!)
Welcome to the forum by the way!

as a single male..i have big forearms and have done this a couple of times......the trick i found was to either grease your arm with engine grease...or vaseline...then it slips down to where you need to get to like a vets arm up a sheeps thingummy!!!!

Tip: If u do change the cable put your rightthumb over the clock end when shoving the gearbox end in with your left hand.

it stopes the inner cable from pushing out and not locating in the female frive on the box

"Speedo not always working right"
I thought this was a technical problem about bathing suits.

Thanks every1, the speedo has now been working fine for the last two days and i havent even touched it yet!! Mini's!
Anyway, i'll leave it well alone until it does stop workin or it'll probly cause more problems and there are more important and urgent things to fix first
