Does any one know of an easyway to remove the speedo cable at the engine end without removing the engine.

With the passenger side jacked up you can just get to the coller by squirming your hand over the drive shaft... tricky but not impossible. If its been done up very tight, then youll need the assistance of a very long screwdriver and a hammer. Place the flat blade of the screwdriver on the right hand edge of the fastening coller and gently tap.. it will move around eventually and finally allow you to perform a little gynacological surgery over the top of the drive shaft.

i normally remove the top rad bracket
top hose and grill

them remove the single bolt that holds the bottom rad bracket to the engine mount bracket

them carfully lift the rad and rest it on top of the rocker cover

gives you access to the speedo drive and you can remove the plastic drive if needed as well

have found this easier if the end has been screwed on really tight

I had no issues with mine, just shoved my left arm down the back of the engine and unscrewed it. You might want to ask a friend to try if you cant fit your own arm down there.

I can tell all of you have cars newer than mine. On the Mk1s you have to do a little more work. It is frequently necessary to separate the inboard U-Joint to gain access to the speedo cable flange and nut.

to change it on a front mounted rad clubby its really a piece of cake

wriggle arm down back right side of engine, feel for the nut, undo

Many thanks for the advice i will go for Scurvy Dogs idea as it means i can flush the cooling system through at the same time
