I'm currently looking into improving my igntion, prefably so that the car starts the first time I turn it over, but any imporvment would be good!.

In TheMiniShopLondon's adverts in mini mag at the bottom left of the page they advertise an "eletronic igintion kit" that comprimises of a Lucas Sports Coil, Lumenition HT Lead Set Red and a Lumenition Magnetronic kit. I was wondering if anybody has fitted this and what they think of it.

if you are running a a+ engine you can fit a factory electronic dizzy from any pr injection engine

you will also need the coil as is higher powered as has to run amplifer on dizzy

easy to fit remove and replace the dizzy there are two wiers from the dixzzy the black and white gos to the negative side the white to the positive

i can supply you with all you need for £35 +postage if you can't source one locally from a breakers

My engine is a bog standard 998cc 1990

What imporvments would I notice with this?

I already have a eletrnic coil lying around, but I think a lucas sports coil may be better

should be a A + engine then you can tell for sure as the A+ uses a fork type

clamp the is held by a single bolt into the block

improved spark you can open the gap to 32 thou i run them at 30 standard is 25 thou

better econemy

improved starting

no problems with the damp

no hassle with points packing up miles from home

every mini i have had or worked on the first thing i do is change the points dizzy for a factory electronic dizzy

i have never had any problems with them as they where designed for the engine

you only really need to by a aftermarket ignition if you have a A series engine as

the dizzy's are different from the later A+ dizzys

the main reason I'm doing this is to try and improve the starting of the car?

So this would make big differnce then?

yes would make a big difference

fitting these dizzys has sorted out a few cars that had bad starting and running

problems due to points wear

Blackout, if you fit the electronic ignition let me know how much of an improvement it is and what type you got it, ive been thinking about getting one for awhile but not done, my car starts first time just by turning key for about a second, its a nice runner.

You sure you need to do this just to improve starting? On my 998 it had standard points and coil and that started quite literatly on first turn of the starter motor.

It may be that you just need to set it up better or renew your points and see if theres anything else wrong.

Points have been done recently, come to think of it is probably done under 30 miles with the new points!

The electronic dizzy was never fitted to the 998, and so unless you get the springs and weights fettled a bit it doesn't really do justice to even the standard 998 cam. Fitting the Luminition Magnetronic kit gives the best of both worlds, as you get to keep the springs, weights and vacuum from your 998 dizzy, whilst the Magnetronic ignition module is basically the same as the one used in the Rover electronic dizzy. That is the Magnetronic, not the optronic or anything else. There is really little point using a sports coil with an electronic ignition as the ignition module gives you a fatter spark anyway.
If you have ballasted ignition then fitting the electronic dizzy (or a kit) is not so straight forward as you need to arrange a different ignition supply to your current one.
I currently use the Rover electronic dizzy (I had it re-tuned by MLM) in a 998 and it works very well. I did previously use the Magnetronic kit which was just as good.

For instant starting, the carb also has to be in good order as does the cam timing, valves and basically good general tune. My mini starts on the first revolution (when the damn battery is charged, must get a trickle charger!).

Are you sure Dan? Just wondering, because about a year ago I went to the local scrappers and got an electronic dizzy from a 998 A+ engined Metro. It looked standard, although maybe the previous owners fitted an electronic dizzy from a 1275 to it? The car was G reg. I don't doubt what you're saying, its just made me wonder as to how the 998 Metro had one on it :erm:

I actually think too dan that the metro's did have electronic ignition on the 998 engines towards the end of their production. What's for sure is that there's no factory A-series 998 with an electronic dizzy!

Hijacking thread but what you're saying is just get a regular coil off a pre-balasted mini and it'll be fine with an electronic dizzy out of a metro? (I'm 1275, not 998)



Oh and I have points right now and my car starts and runs pretty well! Points are very good when you keep them maintained

Is there anywhere online where I can get the magnetronic kit?

Is it worth getting a beefer battery? My current one is only a small one that would fit in the battery holder bit but is currently flat and I dont have a charger yet.

When I start using the car again I will get a new battery and charger, maybe I should get a bigger battery?

Points are very good when you keep them maintained

the hole piont of fitting electronic dizzy is so you dont have to maintain the points its fit and forget

i have fitted the dizzy from a 1300 in a 1000 and can tell no differnce in the running between a 1000 and 1300 dizzy advance curce

as the standard factory cams use much the same spec on both engines

so there is no need to change the advance curve unless you have modifided the engine

the main reson for using the factory dizzy is the saving in cost

£65-75 for a after market kit

£25-30 for every thing you need from a breakers
