Ok, My mini is overheating, even when moving quite fast its still doing it. I dont know if I was supposed to do this, but when I stopped at the side of the road I took the radiator cap off, I couldnt believe how much steam came out, it must have been very hot.
I havent checked anything since it started doing it as its 4am, but i checked the water yesterday.
One bad thing i noticed yesterday was that the oil cap had that yellow stuff on it ( ive heard it called mayonaise) I wiped it off to see if it came back, but I dont know how long it takes for that to build up. Anyone know?
Im know nothing about cars yet, but I am wondering if it could be the head gasket?? someone suggested in another thread about overheating, that this could cause it.
Ive read tweetys question and Im going to try flusing out the system tommorow.

If it turns out to be the head gasket, can anyone tell me how much a replacement will cost?, and roughly how long it would take an amateur with a haynes manual to replace?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated,
thanks a lot,

Sounds like its the gasket... :)

New Head gasket set is around £11, give yourself half a day to change it if your're going by the Haynes manual... It isnt difficult, jus a pain in the arse!

Thanks bluemini.
I may have fixed it though (the overheating at least), I flushed the system out today and took it for a long run, it had no problems, which is weird. Hopefully its sorted, but that still doesnt explain the yellow stuff on the oil cap.
Is the yellow stuff a sure sign that the headgasket needs replacing?,could it be somthing else? or is it just an indicator that it may go in the future?
Thanks a lot,
Sorry for all the questions, This is my first car that Ive ever had to open the bonnet on, other than to change oil etc, hehe. loving it though!!!!!!!!

thanks again ,

You've been bitten by your mini... lol and i can garantee you bang your head on it plenty more times yet!! :)

The milky stuff sometimes apears because the car is only doing short journies, or because it is damp in the air. a good bet would be to take the rocker cover off and clean it out and treat the engine to some new oil, 10w40 is good. Drive it for a few days and see if it does it again.
