Hi all
Recently I found the Mini 30 we bought new in 1989.
Changed the subframe ..... as horrible a job as I remember 30 years ago!!
I decided to tune it a little ..... stage 4 cylinder head & a Stage 1 exhaust kit. Does go a load better now, but I have got the tuning bug now. I would really appre ciate any pointers on what to do next - twin carbs, camshafts??

I agree with the above from what owners and tuners have been telling me.

Stage 4 head on a 998? You definitely need a better camshaft mate. That'll help loads. SW5's are great. My favourite is the MED Hi-Torq. Get some 1.3:1 roller rockers as well and something to control that cam and time it in (Adjustable duplex gears). Since you've recently stage 1'd the motor it would be a shame to ditch the manifold to fit twin carbs. But you will need to get it rolling roaded again. Did you get it tuned after fitting the head? The needle that comes with the stage 1 is designed for the standard cam and head and everything else, so now that you've changed the head it might not be up to it and it will need attention after a new cam.
A performance distributor will help eventually as well, or a good re-tune of your own.
Stick with it mate, 998's are great. You can get great, useable power out of them if you try.

A Mini 30's brakes should be fine when in good condition with an upgraded 998 unless it's in full on race tune, but that would be a bit of a pain to drive on the road anyway. Vacuum assisted front discs/rear spacered drums, good enough for most road use.

Well thank you for all your help, it is greatly appreciated. Think I will go with the suggestion of the swiftune sw5 cam! - don`t appear frighteningly dear either!
I have not had it rolling road tuned yet, just left that to a local garage who races Mini`s, so I hope that will suffice. The needle was supplied by mini Speed in Byfleet Surrey, who also supplied the head & stage 1 kit so I presume that will be OK. After fitting all that kit, performance was dramatically improved though
Does anyone know a place near Rutland that I can get it rolling road tuned? Up here its mainly 4 x 4 specialists & Volvo dealerships!! Also any one recommend a local club that I can join??

Just a passing thought, as I've been playing with a 998 recently.....It's normally a AAA needle which comes with a Stg1 kit, which is about the skinniest needle you can get for an 1 1/2" carb, Instead of the twin carbs, maybe after the SW5 has been put in and some performance ignition for an upgrade to 1 3/4 ( or HIF44 ).
Ohh... Rutland.. Take a trip down the A1 to Peterborough/Cambridge to Pete Baldwins....
