How much power is possible with a non-intercooled turbo? Oh and according to the Mini Spares website the HIF6 is the carby off the MG Metro Turbo.

No,

The Metro used a blow through turbo so the difference is the carb is air tight to stop the boost blowing petrol out in to engine compartment.

It used a Hif 44 that looks almost standard except for....

rubber seals on the throttle spindle

no crank case ventilation connector pipe

all ports are on the plenum mating face, where they'll be fed boost pressure, except for the fuel inlet and anti run on valve pipes.

there's a groove round the top of the dash pot that takes a clamping band to secure the damper and, originally, the carb was held together with anti tamper screws.

And why isn't it sealed?

Once the gaskets and hoses are all in places and its all bolted up i cant see any reason why i wouldn't be sealed.

The HS's float chamber has an external vent: with boost pressure higher than atmospheric the petrol will be pushed back through the jet and out of the float vent. Pressure may also blow by the throttle spindles and the jet, through the mixture adjustment nut.

You probably could seal the carb and feed boost pressure to the float chamber but it'd be much easier with a Hif. Have you got the Vizard A series bible? It has a decent section on how the Turbo Metro carb was made boost sensitive which is another issue you'd have to sort out.

Yes it's a H6, if it's 1 3/4" a bit big for a 998 I'm afraid.

Yes it is.

Not if it's s turbo though. The 1 3/4" carb works fine on a 998 turbo.

I accept that, I meant in response to is it any use for anything - since Tom has a normally aspirated 998 at the moment.

The 940 head is no problem, but the HIF38 could be.

Yes the 38 could be made to work, but it won't be a simple bolt-on like the turbo version of the 44 is. The main problem is that the plenum is for a 44 so won't fit. You'd therefore either have to make a new plenum with a suitable rstrictor ring, or be clever about where you got your float-bowl pressurising signal from.
