My dad was driving home a while back when my his 1979 mini, converted to a 97 motor so I was told died. It spuddered a couple times and then died. I have tested electrical to find that I have no primary ignition. Any ideas what is wrong, where to get parts and how to diagnose the problem.

Thanks Jason

no primary ignition... so you have engine turnover, the fuel tanks' priming, just no sparks? Sound like the coil pack, unless the looms been modded.

No fuel pump the best that I can tell, and not sure what has been done to the harness.

If the fuel pump kicks in on Ignition 2, you should be able to hear a short humming sound followed by a click. The reason I ask about the loom is well - MPi looms and 1979 looms are a little bit different.

Does the car still run fuel injection? Or has the engine been fitted to run on a carb in your 1979 min?

The 79 is set up and running a throttle body. (injection) No I don't hear the pump running or the click. Would this be considered a MPI or a SPI?

1997 is multi point injection..unless you sourced an engine from a very late Equinox, Sprite, or Cooper.

I suggest you check electrics relative to the fuel pump if you cant hear anything from it. My memory is like a sieve at the mo, so I cant recall if there is a fuse for the pump in the fuse block. Should be too hard too find - check over all the fuses in the block ( that is if you have the entire MPI wiring loom) to make sure none have blown. Also be wise to check the pump wiring.

Until we can get some more information and possibly a picture on this, i am considering this topic a can of worms. Dont get me wrong its not that i dont want to help, its just that non standard conversions and not kowing what has or hasnt been done, makes it increadibly difficult to fault find when im this far away from the car :)

At a guess, have you tried resetting the fuel cut of inertia switch?

Tell me more about this fuel inertia switch. I know nothing about these cars but I'm usaully pretty good at repairing autos. Problem is I have no info, books, diagrams etc. SO what is this switch and where abouts could I start looking. Does anyone have a picture of one so I know what I'm looking for. Also how do you reset it.

Keep in mind the car was running great till it caughed and storted like it was running out of fuel and then died, Not to restart since.

Thanks all the help is very much appreciated.

ahhhhh did u run it over a fairly large bump/pot hole?

The fuel cut off switch on standard mpi engine layouts, is located right next to the windscreen wiper motor. About 2" tall, black and a round rubber button on top. Faces upwards.

See 9+10, this is an SPI layout so ignore the rest of the diagram.

Where does the coil recieve it's power from? I would like to back track the power source.
