hi, need some kind advice with hope of some answers...lol presumably this shaft/rod is the thingy connected from the front bottom of floor pan where the pedals are & ends its connections at the steering wheel?

- any difference between the spi & mpi version? bagged & not bagged?
- any timeframe & when to know the shafts bushes are bad?
- can a non airbagged spi steering wheel fits into an airbag & non air bagged version?

kind regards....

Rather confusing!!

MPi column is totaly different. SPi column is the same as previous versions with the twin stalks.

MPi column has a smaller spline diameter, i also suspect the outer column is different as the stalks are different. Its different. I believe you can put a pre MPi inner column into an MPi outer column, though not having seen the parts myself, i cannot be sure.

ALL MPis are fitted with an airbag, No UK variant SPi was ever fitted with an airbag. If you want the airbag you have to stick with the standard wheel. Word of warning, do not poke around at the airbag or its electronics, the bag is installed with explosive charges, it is imensely dangerous!! take it to a specialist who knows what they are doing.

The bushes are worn if the inner column 'wiggles' inside the outer column, the steering weel usualy moves about a fair amount.

I can answer the timeframe one in terms of sportspack/non sportspack. The 2 sizes of wheel are 12x5.5 and 13x6. The 13x6's are stupidly heavily on stationary steering, and cuase a lot of wear due to the offset on ball joints, bearings etc. I can only presume that bushes or anything connected up to these bar-stewards is gonna wear at a faster rate than their 12" or 10" counterparts.
