Hi guys is there any easy way to get the driveshafts back onto the diff? it's a different engine think it's older than mine (1986 Mayfair), however the driveshafts from the engine i've bought fit into my original engine with a few taps from a hammer.
Any suggestions would be helpful, oh and i'm trying to do it with only one ball joint disconnected do i need both disconnected?

Thanks guys
James

It will go in with one balljoint(top) and track rod disconnected.

If the engine is different, did u use the pots (connect at engine) from the old one, as there are 2 sizes!

I had great difficulty getting mine in, then i realised it needed the other size.

Get soemone to hold the brake/hub end level, lay under the car and u can line the balls up with the pot.

Ok i'll just go and play around with the things for another few hours!

I think you confused what i mean.

The pot's are the piece which are on the engine. They come off with a good whack.

My 1980 engine had the larger type and my 1970's engine had the smaller type so i had to take the pot from the 1980 engine and use them on the 70's one.

They will fit whatever engine, but they have different size internals where balls go.

If they will not go in, you will need the larger of the POT's which you can take from the old engine.

Jimbo may have done this properly though and may not have taken the pot joints apart.....

Make sure the circlip on the end of the output shaft isn't narled up as this will hang up on the pot joint, and make sure it's nicely centered over the shaft. Put a little copper slip or graphogen all over the stub shaft (the grease will help the circlip remain in the right place as well as lubricating the joint and preventing the splines locking). Then make sure the splines are lining up properly as you slide the joints in. Also, don't have the steady bars on the engine while you do this so that you can rock the engine to get better alignment with the joint (don't smash your carb into the bulkhead if you've fitted it!).

Thanks for the help guys, no i hadn't taken the pot joints apart (constant velocity ones i guess) Got dad to hold them in place as i managed to lean against a wall an push them in with my legs! Just needed a bit of persuading, second 1 went on a lot easier! typical.
All sorted an good now just need an oil filter!
Haven't had my car for a month, i want it now!

Glad to help.
The second one usually goes in easier as the first one you have fitted is now holding the diff still, and because the shafts are different lengths so they can both move about different amounts.
