Hiya guys, another problem! Stater motors. The engine i've bought and just fitted had the older style starter without the solenoid attatched, the problem is i don't have a solenoid so whenever i connect the battery the starter turns! what do i need to do? I did try my newer starter on this engine but it made horrible noises and when i took it out there were a few iron fillings on it. Is it possible to use the solenoid off the newer motor on the older starter motor? don't particularly want to blow anythin up so i thought i'd ask the experts first!

Thanks again James

Yup just get a starter solenoid (one that mounts to the inner wing), and all should go according to plan...

Will the solenoid come with wiring diagram if not can someone tell me? Also i'm trying a solenoid which we believe to be the right one but once connected every time i try to start it a relay above the suspension pillar is making a clicking sound? Any ideas what this is and what i can do?

That's probably the starter relay. In the mid 80's they decided you need to run the starter solenoid via a relay (which is really dumb by the way since the solenoid is a relay anyway :saywhat: ). If it's just clicking and the solenoid isn't working then either the solenoid is dead or you have wired it wrong.
You will need to chop the wiring about a bit to make an innertia starter and seperate solenoid work on a car designed for a pre-engeaged starter. I'll go off and check the diagrams and get back to you.

The relay that i've bought has the two terminals 1 to go to the starter motor, and 1 to come from the battery and starter switch. There are also 2 spade terminals 1 for the earth and 1 for the STARTER RELAY...
These have all been tried in various combinations still nothing, the lead i'm using to connect the solenoid and starter is a bit dodgy but surely it should still work?
Gettin quite p****d off with this dam thing.
Can any body out there help me?

There is no connection for earth on the starter solenoid, it is earthed through the fixing, the ones on the battery peg should be connected to you main ( probably Brown ) power lines. the little tab on the side should be connected to the ingition wire ( white/red )

I'm just thinking that there may be other wires in there which are associated with the Balast ignition, which are connected to the solenoid on the pre-engaged starter... I'll find a wiring diagram and post..

ok so if i'm so yes it is the ignition wire, so if it is not screwed in and earthed then will it work? At the moment it is not earthed and nothing is happening.

Looking at the wiring digram, there is an additional wire ( white/yellow ) which goes to the +ve side of the coil, but what part of the solenoid it needs to connect too I don't know as there seems to be more connections later solenoid ( attached to the S/motor )

If you get the click then you need to check that you are getting an output voltage on the solenoid which is then connected to the starter motor, if you are then you starters suspect.

Glad you got it done, I'll not bother with the wiring stuff now since it's all working.
