I'm pretty sure you can have stick-on plates on Pre-1973 cars.

I know it goes against what Dan said but I read a very similar topic recently about a guy having carbon fibre plates, he contacted the local DVLA/VOSA who said that as long as the background is black and the lettering silver, it's fine.

Which is all he asked them about. The plates still have to be flat and vertical and technically the characters have to be aluminium rather than white (it's the charachters that must be reflective on this type of plate rather then the background). According the the DVLA there are no stick on plates that comply with any set of plate regulations.

There is a loop hole as such, which is if they are fitted as original equipment, but on minis they never were with the exception of some of the works rally cars..

I believe one of the bes places to get plates in this country is http://www.pl8s.co.uk

Yes having looked into this today it is more complex than I thought for the pre-'73 registrations. There's a few different aspects to it and it's tricky to sum up because there were several different allowed plate constructions back then, one of which was 'an uninterrupted area of bodywork which must be flat or nearly flat' which would cover stick on plates. While the front of the bonnet of an E-type is nearly flat however you can't really say the same for a Mini bonnet. So while it's not definitely illegal I wouldn't say it was a clear cut ruling for either case.

For later cars though it remains very illegal.

thanks dan

i ask one of the MOT testers at the garage that i work at if it would pass an MOT

he said as long as you can read the number plate from the front you are allowed stick on plates

He is wrong if the car is later than 1973. The MOT doesn't test that your car is road legal and neither does the MOT tester. All they test is that it's safe, the amount of testing they are allowed to do regarding the number plate is very limited. It will be you that gets proecuted if you do break the law, not the MOT tester. The current penalty for misrepresenting your registration is a maximum fine of £1000.00, some points and even withdrawal of the registration mark in extreme cases.

If your car is pre-73 though, carry on. There is a definition of where you must be able to read it from in the relevant regulation, and it must still be "nearly flat".
