I saw a link to some chap selling CB radios, and it got me thinking! Do people still use them? I use to use them some 15-20 years ago and it might be fun to stick one in my mini, but do people use them?

Have you got a CB radio? Yes/No

cb gets used quite a lot in off roading. i have one in my landie and in the mini. most of the people in the mini clubs i belong to have them which obviously makes getting one a bit more worthwhile.
put it this way: its free to use. its legal to use as well, unlike using a mobile. and you dont have to mess about finding someones phone number. and if you get a CB with a PA speaker function, and rig an external speaker up under the bonnet, you can scare pedestrians/shout at other drivers etc without raising your voice or opening the window.

rofl this is what we were doing on the way home!

we passed a load of road workers and of course they were standing around. so we turned on the PA and said. " it wont get finished at that rate will it?" etc etc rofl!

so funny!. and sometimes theres was the odd comment we saw a pretty lady. (that was my friend though ...)

Yup, Got a Midland in my real mini, and am thinking about doing some mods to an old Binatone 5 star (after I get around to sorting the blown audio amp stage) and adding it to the Bini for a bit of mobile DXing.

I was looking into some antenna designs that are low profile for use on the mini - had a few interesting results, but nothing that really stood out from a properly tuned 3" springer style whip - no getting around the hight thing really, the higher - the better. A full 9" whip is best, but impractical for use on a mini (unless you got a realy, REALLY BIG mag mount, or bloody strong gutters........and avoid low bridges and underground parking!). I do have an idea I plan to test out for an antenna, which may be better for high speeds and not look so odd on a small car - just need the spare time to build and test it. :D

I have modified the Midland rig for 400 channel use, but I only listen on those extra frequencies - I keep it legal.......and avoid the wrath of Amature radio crowd (By Dawkins, they need to chill out about CBs and "unauthorised" usage of unused, unallocated frequencies! :w00t: If people don't explore and use some of the unused channel space (within reason), then it will only end up in the grips of yet another faceless moibile phone operator, with out so much as a wimper of protest.........Hmmphf, could rant on about this for ages.).

Anyhow - if anyone is interested, http://www.4x4cb.com/ are a great site for CB stuff, and the guy is quite helpfull and knows his stuff. ^_^
