My fave story about dumb ideas, is also a 'merkin one. This guy decides to fit a new tyre to his wheel rim on his truck, himself, so he could save on the cost of the local tyre place doing it for him - aparantly with the thought " because they'll only do wrong anyway!".......famous last words!
So our numb-nuts mechanic grabs his new shiney tyre, his 19 inch rim and a can of Ether.....and a lighter (see where this is going?). He get the tyre over the rim with a bit of a struggle, then with a bit more effort gets the other wall of the tyre over the rim - now he just needs to get the walls mounted on the rim "properly". So, he grabs the can of spray Ether, and sprays in a good ammount inside the tyre, sprays a line along the garage floor ( a "safe" distance away ), with the intention of the Ether igniting and blowing the tyre into place with the expanding gas (this is quite a common thing to do with off-roading communities). He clicks his lighter, lights the Ether............FFFFPPOOOP!........Nothing - tyre still not mounted.
So, he thinks "hmmm, maybe not enough Ether", so squirts about 1/4 of the can in the tyre and tries again............PHHHBANG!......STILL not mounted. He tried again, and still nothing.
At this point he thinks it obviously Still not using enough Ether, so empties the rest of the can in the tyre, and half of another can just to be shure.
leads a long line of Ether away from his tyre, and lights it....................KA-F***ING-BOOM!!!!!.....Tyre is destroyed, STILL did not mount on the rim, and the guy is now semi-conscious, dazed, and has a loud ringing in his ears......and his neighbours are now rushing out of their houses to see what the explosion was.......and the Police are now on their way after hearing reports of a loud explosion !
After spending the next 20mins explaining to the police that he was just trying to mount the tyre on his rim, and must have "used a little TOO much Ether !", he finally goes to check on his mornings work, and finds a bit of the tyre side wall - the bit with the tyre dimentions written on it.......
wait for it.....
it's worth it....
The tyre was marked as 9.0 inch wide MAX..........the rim however was 10.5 inch wide - there was NO WAY this guy was EVER going to get that tyre to fit!!

thats why that method didn't work, but you can get a tyre to stretch that much, just look at some of the VW guys!
195/40 on a 9" wide rim.

Good lord!
I would love to see the MOT man's face when he sees THAT ! Seriously though, what's the point of that?? Can't possibly have much grip due to the centre of the tyre tread being lower than the sides (side walls will be straining to return to the molded shape, and will create tension across the ply area.....then again the tread edges will not have any support, which they get from the side walls.......I dunno HOW that would react in use, really), and must have bad wear characteristics due to the same reason.
Looks odd too! Though I could understand it being used to create a unique tyre profile on something like a rear wheel of a chopper, where speed and handling are not the important things to consider - purely cosmetic for cosmetics sake. A car would just look silly.
