Can you not just link off the coolant temp feed to the ecu?

if its an spi the temp sender is under the inlet.

also rather than drill the head you could drill n tap the 'stat spacer

It wont fit in the spacer

I drilled and tapped the top of the thermostat housing, but due to the complex shape, i had to use Loctite thread sealant to get it to seal :) Even then you have to be careful as the sender is close to touching the top of the thermostat, if you get even the slightest bit wrong, it wont go back together and you will be left with a huge hole in the top of your thermostat housing

well that hole that isnt a hole (if you get what i mean!) is where the temp sender would go on a carb'd/non injection mini. so that is an ideal place to put yours, as theres plenty of metal around it just in case you FIU. you'll need a drill bit that is just slightly larger than the unthreaded section of the sensor, and a tap which is the correct thread for the sensor, to be able to thread the hole that you have carefully drilled.
you will need to flush the cooling system out fully as there is likely to be bits of metal in there after drilling.
If you're unsure about doing it, the best thing is either dont do it, take the head and sensor to an engineering company and explain what you want doing (you'll need a new head gasket + the other gaskets when you refit the head).
