you wont have to compress anything as it pe engaged

the earlier starter had a bendix wich threw the pinon in on the latter one a soliniod pushes it in you can strip it all down but generaly the best course is to go to a motorfactors and get a recon one rover will stich you

the stepper motor is on the thottle body under the air filter the plug for it is to the left on the side of the unit as you look at it

Remove the stepper motor from its housing under the throttle bell crank lever. You will need to remove the injector housing from the throttle body to get the stepper motor out. Once its out, use a soldering iron and a little new solder to re solder the wire connections. I have seen these connections become 'dry' resulting in the motor not working correctly. I doubt very much there is anything wrong with the stepper motor. It could be down to the tune of the idle setting thats throwing the fault up, or as described above.

As for your starting problem, its probibly either the battery, the ground connections or the starter solenoid, but not limitted to

The connector is on the right as you look at it :)

Checked all straps + connection, the battery is charged up and have tried another battery. Must be the starter. £85 for a new one, but going to see if i can give them my one and get a bit knocked off. I thought the ECU will do the idle?

It does, but if the little screw on the throttle stop has been adjusted for reasons known only to god, the idle will need tuning, and that requires the service tool/ diagnostic connecting up

Hmm, when it went for its Mot, it failed on many things including emmisions. I knew it was going to fail, because it would rev all over the place, i was standing outside the car watching it go from 1000 revs to 2500 revs, back down to 500 revs, then up to 3000 revs. Turned out to be one of the sensors, begain with the letter "P" and was about 25 letters long. anyways it cost me £100 for the sensor and it fixed the idel problem, surely they would of done either noticed or had to do something with the throttel stop screw?

Dont expect the person who works on your car knows what he is doing, more often than not, they dont, they may give you that impression, as thats why you took your car to them in the first place because you expect them to know what they are doing, they should know what they are doing but infact blag it 25% of the time. Unfortunately, the mini is in that 25% it would seem. Hell, Minisport dont know how to fix SPi systems and they you would expect are the people who should be able to fix it!

Just dont expect people to know whats wrong with it, they will get it running t a point where the problem isnt as noticable, take your money, pat you on your back, so when you return next year, its the same story all over again.

Sorry rant over. I do not claim to know everything, no one person does, and if they say they do, find some one else, :)

Sensors used on the SPi

Lambda sensor, also known as oxygen sensor

MAP sensor, Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor, or Manifold Air Pressure sensor

IAT Sensor, Inlet Air Temp Sensor

CLT sensor, Coolant Temp Sensor

VR sensor, Crank Position sensor

TPS, Throttle Position Sensor

There are no other sensors on the SPi

OK the name of that sensor was Throttle Potentionometer. It cost me £50, thought it was alot more.
I fitted a new starter motor today, only to find the car still didnt start. Im going to put my old one back on, take the new starter motor back for a refund and buy a new battery. I have a feeling my alternator isnt charging my battery up enough, my llights went off when I tried to start, and I got it started using jump leads this time. Going to leave my battery on charge tonight and try it in the morning, if it starts I will soon find out if my alternator is falty because I will probably break down again.

Also the reason i think my alternator is falty, I spent a good 2.5 hours on the motorway which should of charged the battery up, and I spent about 1.5 hours sitting in traffic in London trying to get home.
