Hi,
Im just looking for a bit of advice on a few things, sorry to ask so many questions in one post, but I dont have the internet at my house at the moment so I cant get on the net as often as I would like, this way I can keep track of my posts.

Ive sheared the nuts off that hold the rear subframe to the body. Since Im replacing the sills, should I somehow get the old nuts off and weld new ones in, or could I just drill and tap new threads into the old nuts?

Also, Im going to fit brace bars, but i dont yet have the metal mountings for the front subframe. Would I get away with fitting the brace bars now and then fitting the proper mounts later? or will I have fitting probs.
Also, when I do fit the bars, am I ok to have the front wheels removed, and then just stand the engine in so there is a bit of weight on the frame?

I just removed the plate that holds the top of the front shock absorber, there is a hole behind there and the whole area seems rather crusty. Is the part that I can see just a skin covering the end of that thick beam, or is it likely the repair will be more involved?

At the moment the mini is resting on some railway sleepers under the front footwell, the front subframe is still attatched. Am I likely to twist or bend the shell if I remove the front subframe for any ammount of time?

thanks a lot,
sorry again for asking multiple questions.

Okay, I can do the rear subframe bolts one.
When the sills are off remove the old bolts and weld some nice new ones on,
Don't know about the brace-bars - never done that bit...

Front sub should be able to come out, maybe consider putting wooden blocks under the body, not stressing it, but ensuring it's not going to move to far, if at all...

How strongly do the new nuts have to be welded on?, could I just use a mig welder and tack them at the side and the bottom?
thanks a lot Dave,

Ahhhh I see how it works now, I thought that the holes that the bolts go into and under the rear seat were threaded themselves?! But if they are bolts it would explain why I can't get one of the bolts out, it just goes round and round, and no amount of pulling will make it come out any further!!

brace bars

personally the best way to do it, is solid mount subframe and mount the brace bars with the car on wheels, as this will be the position you want it to stay.

Axle stands, jack may interfere with the postion and allowing weight of engine etc to position bars.

Shell shouldnt twist if car is supported and subframe is removed.

Hope this helps

Errm, Jammy that sounds really quite bad. The holes in the heel board have nuts welded onto the back of them and your bolts should be able to unscrew right out of the shell. You need to find out what's going on as your rear subframe may not be held on very well.

Yea don't worry, its on my project Clubby! Not my Bill Richards beast. I may be swapping over to a rear beam if I decide this month to go ahead with the vtec.

What you can do is get replacement plates for that section, Had to do that with petal on both sides, and they also have the captive nuts welded in, but they were only tacked, I completed the weld all the way round ( them nuts aint shifitng now :( )

Back to the original questions...

1.. see above

2.. you will need the solid mounts otherwise the front of you car will move alll over the place and will be dangerous.. and when fitting the brace bars has the car down on it;s wheels engin et all in the car,

3. Plate it... Before / After

(notice the reuse of an old A panel ( just the right size and shape,. bt also provide rienforcements to the brace bar fixing points)

4.. Nope should be ok like that... Petal was up on axle stands for about 4 months while I stuck the floor back together.
