hi

my son has just purchased a 1994 mini cooper spi , when driving the other day it just cut out on him but as it did so he said the rev counter was bouncing up and down (dont know if this is of any relevance) i had a mess about with all the wires and conections but still did not fir , petrol pump is priming and engine turns over fine , when i removed a spark plug to test for spark it fired up (typical) and has done ever since any ideas i am now paranoid of it reoccuring , also looked behind engine to check for loose connections ect and there is the wiring for the coolant temp sensor and a thick one which is not attatched to anything and loooks burnt on the end, any idea as to where this goes, thought it was for the lamba sensor but that has small wires which are intact.

thanks for any help in advance

The thik brown wire under the inlet manifold is for the manifold heater in the bottom of the manifold, chances are if there is burning, the heater itself may be faulty, it could also just be the fact that the connection was loose resulting in this burning and with it being just dangling free. when this happens, it usualy takes the relay pack with it, burnng the track on the PCB inside it. either way its not good dangling there as its a 30 amp fused supply.

Things to look out for are dodgey inertia switches broken wiring on the fuel pump circuit, loose connections on the coil and bad earths especialy in this weather.

sprocket you were part right cheers

checked all wiring again the wires down to the coolant sensor are wraped in heat sleeve , so didn't see it at first :withstupid: but at some time engine steady has been loose and the wires have been trapped between bulkhead, stripped heat sleeve off to find broken wire ,soldered it back up and re insulated and hey presto first turn of key every time
