had the air filter off today to see if i could see where my stong scent of fuel was coming from, looked around and couldnt see any leaks. started it up and when u first blip the throttle you can see some sort of little spay come back up the elbow on the back of the carb. i presume this is fuel as i hope it isnt oil lol. any ideas what could be causing this?

what sounds like is happening is the fuel is being drawn towards the airfilter housing and not towards the engine, this is mainly caused with incorrect timing, or incorrect valve clearances.

have you done anything to the car or has it been running badly

Could be a slightly blown head gasket between siamesed cylinders. That happened to me once and this was one of the signs. If it has blown here there'll be no other signs like water in the oil or anything. Do a compression test to find out.
