When i brought Dave the mini he had been painted in black hamerite paint by hand he looked a mess but as i have later found out it was hiding alot of corrosion. When i got him back to work I started to look around him and found 4 bits of welding n/s floor to sill, o/s floor to sill o/s front inner arch and o/s rear inner arch.
He came with spax adjustables and heavy duty tie rods and he sat on a sorry looking set of minilites he has crome door handles and window winders, drop bracket and 12" steering wheel. A new set of red carpets mk1 estate rear leather seat 2 piece head lineing go faster crome rocker cover and angle eyes.
I had an old 1275gt which was to bad to do anything with so I nabbed the 1275 mg a+ engine out of it a set of mini fins that i found behind the wheels. Fast and very racey was the plan, this had to happen and the L2B ticket was paied for so would it be done in time?
I went digging about on ebay and found a set of omega +60s with 6cc dish, had been raced for a month. I then trusted the rest of the parts to come from mini sport which was the biggest mistake of the build. A kent 296 scatter cam kit with double valve springs, new oil pump, big ends and mains which they decided to send +10s instead of stds, centr oil pickup centre main strap and a lightend duplex chain kit. This took 2 months for them to sort and deliver after countless arguments and calls and emails. I then decided to use mini spares for my needle spring and new omega rings these were delived within 2 days and right the first time.
I sent the block off to an old boss of mine at the machine shop I used to work in. where the block was over bored +60 and 10 thou taken off the face to get a good mate with head, the head had 30 thou taken off as it hadnt been skimed before. i then opened the ports up and smoothed them out, matched the inlet to the head and the lcb.
The build went well it had a shiny copper headgasket and i took the time to find a ballbearing for the oil presure relief valve.I then got a couple of mates together to give me a lift with the engines on the exchange.
By this time it was 3 weeks to L2B I had a 4 month old son taking most of my time up so I called upon my dad who is a welder and fabricator to help make the plates up and between us we welded up him ready for mot. I called in all my many favors to get a load of friends silly enough to sand off hamerite and the body work began. After about a week we found the true shape of Dave who had filler here and there but didnt look to bad so I justgrey primed him so Icould go L2b in 1 colour.I was given a set of wellers with new 175s on for more grip looks more radical aswell.
He past his mot got the tax disc and away we went a week of running a round found the centre speedo that I had fitted to be miles out upon fitting the road angle 70 mph was actually 102 mph ow dear. I had a teething fault with a split brake pipe but other than that it was fine. Me and my friend paul who has a tuned 1000 went to my work for some last minute tweeks then saturday was upon us. We left peterborough me and just_jack in the estate and paul and his son in his 1000, got to sawtry about 5 miles from home before first adjustments were needed, the engine was pinking under load when the temp was at half so a little tweek and we were away.We made it with only the oil presure gauge giving us a fright as it packed up whilst under full throttle over taking. We used £90 of fuel.
I had many problems getting the engine to stop pinking so I went back to basics turned engine to tdc no1 no mark on pully so tdc no3 and 40 btdc the mark came round, it had the wrong pully on it. I marked a new tdc mark on it and timed the engine up set the co.Upon test drive I noticed that the car had alot more power and I now cant stop it from spinning in 3rd under full throttle.
3 weeks ago I re started the body work big mistake the wings are had it, so my friend gave me a 2 piece flip front which I have fitted leaving the inner wings in and bolting the wings and front pannel to them. the doord are repairable same as the rear doors the rear quaters are looking a bit sorry, but my dad has fabricated a plate that I will be welding in soon, I also resprayed th roof in crazy boy blue which is a blue with light metalic look, looks nice.
This is my project to date I will keep updating as I go along hopefully some of You will see it at L2B next year.
