If the gearbox hasnt been reconned the MPi gearbox is renowned for crunching in 2nd gear!

Mine crunches in second gear, but only if I'm not careful with the gear change. Doesn't tend to happen now if I get the speed and revs just right.

Very annoying, cant drive as aggressive and when you downshift it is impossible to avoid. It will only get worse as the synchro dies, id get it sorted before it gets any worse. S'pose its how you drive n'all, put it this way, i used to make the most of each gear! If you drive conservatively im sure it can be put up with.. still highly annoying though, and expensive to fix.

It only ever happens on downshift, even then it's still very rare. You just have to take your time with it and treat it like your mother.

Who wants to treat a cooper s like your mother?! lol

Put it this way dude, you will need it sorting eventually and like i said depends how aggresive you are when you downshift and by that i mean at what speed you are doing when you enter 2nd. I just found it dead annoying, and wasnt able to make the most of the engine with the problem.

@ minilover - I got a remanafactured box, which i was recomended, that way whoever you choose to sort it, can completely take apart your box and replace anything else that is worn while they are in the heart of the box. Speak to guessworks.

Oo, thanks for reply :withstupid: I asked him about it earlier  Am I correct to assume its a big job? Its only just started doing it this month and only like twice... so just wondering really... its a bit of a pain when its my daily drive... :D

in a word YES. lol
Took minisport best part of a day to do mine (engine out jobbie), i made the mistake of not upgrading my camshaft while the engine was out. Would recommend you get a swiftune sw5-i aswell, great for city driving and country roads.

Tom, sorry for flooding your thread

I don't have a Cooper S though! :D

It doesn't crunch anymore, so what's the problem?

It'll last ages as long as I'm not agressive with it.

If you hit a pot hole and the engine cuts out, just press the big black button in the top right corner of the engine bay.

I can remember not knowing about this. Hitting a masssive pothole and not noticing the engine had cut out due to music/slowing down for a round about so I was coasting abit, went to pull off and nothing happening. Haha.

Had to push it back up the road I had come down, was uphill for about 100 foot to a pull in! :D

I had'nt got a clue what it was, my uncle came and sorted it within 2 seconds! git.

I miss my Mpi :withstupid:

I dunno about anyone elses, but Mine ate wheel bearings. Went through about 3 sets in 2 years. Was on 12x6's. Popped spark plugs to for some reason, onlt had a short stint of it, and about 3 plugs, but I still didnt get it.

Have fun Cruising! There best on motorways I find. Cruise sooo nicely. Pull well to for that bit of overtaking

Same thing happed to me.

I thought to myself...

"That's odd, why is the throttle so unresponsive?"

That pothole I hit was terrible, I even hit it the next day and the same thing happend! :D

Then the council filled it in a week later!

Cooper S... Cooper (S)port.

A Cooper S and a Cooper Sport are not the same thing, the Cooper S had the John Cooper "90bhp" conversion.

None. Only differences are the arches, couple of extra dials and wheels.

Nice sounding example at a good price....

I believe that the black button resets the fuel pump....

Another safety feature......along with the side impact beams (er...sticks) in the doors...

Happy motoring...

Morning Guys

with a baby on the way and still desperate to keep my enthusiasms for minis, ROsie and I have bought an 1998 R reg MPi cooper.

I've never driven one before, and only looked under the bonnet of a few.

What problems am I likely to encounter and what should I be looking out for?

Cheers

Tom

The temp sensor is/was a known fault. If the fan is constantly on, it would be worth while replacing it.

I love my MPI, but I've been neglecting my City - she's in the garage getting ready for a supercharger.

Mines a 1999 cooper with 28,000mls and ive only owned it two weeks , Second gear is crunching already on the downshift but if i change from 3rd to 2nd below 20mph i just about get away with it .

Not a happy chappy and its ruining the experiance

Been onto guessworks and my local garage to try and sort out some sort of price .

its an engine out job for starters...

Looks like its gonna be an expensive job "gulp"

Happy new year an all.......
