Difficult to say how long really. I've done it gradually over the last two years, doing a bit more everytime I've needed to replace something or serviced it.

I reckon it would probably add up to a good fortnights work if I was doing it from start to finish.

Taking the waxoyl off was the most time consuming part as this is really sticky and difficult to get out of all the nooks and crannies....especially as everthing is so tightly packed in....Much patience and plasters required !!!

I'm lucky that I don't need to drive it everyday, so I could take lots of bits off and take my time. Would be more difficult and time consuming if it was a daily drive.

Well worth the effort though.......let us know how you get on....

I would like to clean my SPI engine up too, its had many oil leaks and the whole engine is covered in grime. I bought a tin of "Gunk", cheaper if you get it from wilkensons. I used some of the stuff on the front of the block and it didnt even scratch the surface of the dirt, so I dicided the only option will be to take the whole engine out and give it a complete strip down of parts and repaint everything.

What did you find that worked to remove the grime and dullness of the aluminum clutch and gearbox housing? I haven't had much time to look around my local automotive shop.

I used a combinations of things really....high pressure jet wash using a very fine spray, wall paper steamer and stiff brush, wire wool and chrome polish (e.g. autosol). Paint thinners was also very good using a small brush...

My gearbox was changed by Rover after they failed to fix the 3rd gear synchro and the replacement was finished in black paint rather than the usual bare alloy, so I just repainted this with high temperature paint after I'd cleaned it up.

Once I'd finished, I gave everything a soaking with Auto Glym Vinyl and Rubber Care to give it a bit of a shine.
